DUNEDIN, FL - Castellano and Nightingale combined for 4.0 shutout innings out of the bullpen, but a ninth-inning leadoff home run sunk the Clearwater Threshers (46-22, 2-1) in a 3-2 walkoff loss to the Dunedin Blue Jays (33-36, 1-2) on Sunday afternoon in Dunedin. The Threshers travel to Bradenton for a six-game set beginning on Wednesday.
Emaarion Boyd sent Blue Jays starter Irv Carter's third pitch of the game into center field for a leadoff hit. He stole second and moved to third on a groundout before Bryan Rincon drove him in to short to open the scoring. With two outs in the inning, Otto Kemp was hit by a pitch and stole second base. Felix Reyes drove him home with a single to give the Threshers a 2-0 lead.
Dunedin tied the game up at two in the home half of the first with an RBI double and a groundout plating both runs. The game stayed tied at two until the ninth when Jeffrey Wehler led off the inning with a walkoff home run to hand the Threshers a 3-2 defeat.
Jonathan Petit allowed two runs on one hit in 4.0 innings of work, walking five and striking out three in a no-decision. Nightingale allowed two hits in 2.0 shutout frames with two strikeouts. Castellano tossed 2.0 innings without allowing a hit or a run and walked two. Andrew Walling allowed the walkoff home run to his only batter faced in the ninth.
With his single in the third, Crawford tied the longest hitting streak in the Florida State League this season, reaching with a hit in his 14th-straight game...Petit recorded his 100th career strikeout against Ryan McCarty to end the third...Kemp walked multiple times in the game for the tenth time this season...He is tied for sixth in the league with 41 walks this season...The Threshers have two days off before their next road series begins on Wednesday, June 28th on the road against the Bradenton Marauders (Single-A, Pittsburgh Pirates)...
