Clearwater Threshers News Release
Deadlocked at two in the 11th inning on Thursday, Dylan Cozens delivered a run-scoring single to lift the Clearwater Threshers to a 3-2 win and the series victory over the Jupiter Hammerheads at Roger Dean Stadium.
For the second straight day, the Threshers rallied late at Jupiter.
It was Clearwater (5-3) who grabbed the game's first run. Brodie Greene singled to open the first, and Domonic Brown knocked him home with a double to center to give the Threshers a 1-0 edge in the opening frame.
The Hammerheads (3-5) jumped out in front three innings later against Clearwater starter Brandon Leibrandt.
With two on and two out, Harold Riggins lined a two-bagger to right to bring home both baserunners, making the score 2-1 in favor of Jupiter.
That advantage held until the eighth inning.
With one down, Greene and Andrew Pullin connected for back-to-back base knocks off reliever Casey McCarthy. A wild pitch advanced both runners 90 feet, and McCarthy intentionally walked Brown to load the bases.
Andrew Knapp followed by lifting a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Greene with the tying run.
Leibrandt worked six innings in the start for the Threshers, limiting Jupiter to two runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out six.
Mark Leiter Jr. replaced him in relief, and held the Hammerheads at bay for the next four innings. Leiter (1-0) struck out four batters and permitted only one hit and two walks.
In the 11th inning, it was Knapp who got things going, facing reliever Tyler Bremer (0-1). With one down, the Threshers catcher drove a triple to right field to place the go-ahead run just 90 feet away. Cozens then delivered with a single up the middle to make it 3-2 Clearwater.
Ulises Joaquin was called upon to shut the door in the bottom half, and the righty set down all three men he faced to earn his third save of the season.
Brown finished the night 1-for-3 with the RBI double, a walk, and two strikeouts. The rehabbing Phillies outfielder is 5-for-17 (.294) in six games with Clearwater, as he works his way back from achilles tendinitis.
Clearwater will return home on Friday to open a three-game series with the Lakeland Flying Tigers, starting at 6:30 p.m. Miguel Nunez (0-0) gets the ball for the Threshers, facing off against Lakeland's Tommy Collier (1-0). The call can be heard live on threshersbaseball.com beginning at 6:15 p.m.
Friday is also 70's Night at Bright House Field, with a post-game concert by Disco Inferno, presented by Leinenkugel and New Belgium. Tickets are available here or by calling 727-467-4457.
