CLEARWATER - The Clearwater Threshers stayed in the race for the Florida State League's North Division, walloping the visiting Daytona Cubs 9-2 Monday in front of 1,553 fans at Bright House Field.

The Threshers (35-31) kept pace with their competitors in the FSL North, staying one game back of division-leading Dunedin and half a game behind Brevard County with the win. The Cubs (33-31) fell into a two-game hole behind the Blue Jays, all but eliminating them from the first-half crown.

Clearwater cracked the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning against Daytona starter Zach Cates, who walked the bases loaded to begin the frame. First baseman Brock Stassi smacked a sacrifice fly to center to plate third baseman Maikel Franco, and catcher Logan Moore sent a single sizzling up the middle to score first baseman Chris Serritella, giving the Threshers a 2-0 advantage.

Daytona answered in the top of the fourth against Threshers hurler Mario Hollands. Javier Baez hit a ball to left field that bounced off the tip of left fielder Pete Lavin's glove for a two-base error, and then came in when Dustin Geiger bashed his eighth homer of the season to left, knotting things up at 2-2.

The Threshers jumped back ahead in the bottom of the fourth, as second baseman Carlos Alonso cracked a one-out double up the third base line, and then came home on an RBI single by Stassi. The first baseman moved to third on a wild pitch from Cates, and shortstop Jose Mojica walked to put runners on the corners. Lavin ripped a single to left to score Stassi and make it 4-2.

Clearwater poured it on in the bottom of the fifth against Daytona reliever Austin Reed. After Franco drew a one-out walk, Serritella chopped a single over Geiger at first for a single, moving Franco to third. Alonso beat out an infield single that scored Franco and advanced Serritella to second, and a single from Stassi plated Serritella, with Alonso reaching third base on the play. Mojica hit a two-out bouncer that Wes Darvill couldn't handle at second, earning a single in the process. Stassi made it to second and Alonso scored to make it 7-2.

The Threshers added more scoring in the bottom of the sixth, as Dugan pummeled a fastball from Reed over the right field wall for a solo homer. The round-tripper was Dugan's eighth of the season. Franco then beat out a chopper for an infield single, and Serritella slashed a double to right to score Franco, giving the Threshers a 9-2 lead that they'd hold onto the rest of the way.

Hollands spun five fine innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk, fanning five. Severino Gonzalez tossed two perfect frames with three strikeouts. Zack Grimmett threw a scoreless inning with two walks in his Threshers debut, and Juan Sosa locked it down with a perfect ninth, striking out one.

Cates took the loss with four runs allowed on five hits and five walks over four innings. He dealt four strikeouts and threw two wild pitches. Reed surrendered five runs (four earned) on seven hits and a walk in two innings, whiffing one. Jeff Lorick threw two scoreless innings of relief, allowing three hits.
