Threshers Take Series Lead with 6-2 Win

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Jose Pujols went yard for the second consecutive night, and Jose Gomez turned in his third multihit game as the Clearwater Threshers took the lead in the four-game series with a 6-2 victory over the Daytona Tortugas at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Gomez finished 2-for-3 with a walk, and has gone 7-for-13 (.538) in the first three games of the series.

The Tortguas (31-23) grabbed the early advantage in the second inning, after Ibandel Isabel led off with his league-leading 12th home run of the season. Daytona added another in the frame on TJ Friedl's sacrifice fly to go up 2-0.

Clearwater (26-31) cut the deficit to one in the third, after Arquimedes Gamboa worked a seven-pitch at-bat and doubled up the first base line. Adam Haseley followed with a single through the right side, scoring Gamboa to make it 2-1.

Pujols tied the ballgame in the fourth, launching his second homer in as many days. Pujols shot one over the wall to the right of center to knot the game up at two, giving him nine home runs on the season.

The teams remained tied into the sixth when, for the second straight day, the Threshers broke out in front with a two-out, sixth-inning rally.

Edgar Cabral set the table when he reached on an infield single, and Pujols drew a walk to end the evening for starter Tony Santillan (4-4).

After Aaron Fossas entered in relief, Raul Rivas worked through a seven-pitch battle before driving a double to the warning track in center to score Cabral and Pujols and put the Threshers in the lead, 4-2. Gomez followed with a single to center to plate Rivas and make it 5-2.

Adonis Medina (6-2) earned the win with five innings of two-run ball in the start, permitting just three hits and a walk while picking up six strikeouts. Josh Tols entered in relief, and tossed two scoreless in his second professional outing.

Clearwater tacked on an unearned run in the eighth to go up by four, after Cabral walked and scored with two outs on an error on second baseman Brantley Bell.

Will Hibbs worked around a pair of walks to hold the Tortugas off the board in the eighth, and Aaron Brown tossed a scoreless ninth to finish it.

The series finale is set for 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, when the Threshers go for the series win with Mauricio Llovera on the hill against lefty Scott Moss. The game will be broadcast live on threshersbaseball.com starting at 6:50 p.m.
