Clearwater Threshers News Release

The Clearwater Threshers were hurt by the big inning on Saturday, as the Daytona Cubs took both ends of the doubleheader, 5-4 and 8-4.

Daytona (18-28) utilized a four-run inning to grab the lead in game one, and then put up a four-spot twice in the nightcap to send the Threshers (9-38) to their ninth straight defeat.

KC Serna finished the day 4-for-6 with a double, RBI, and four runs scored.

The teams were scoreless in the opener until the Cubs struck for four runs off Jon Prosinski in the third inning. They opened the frame with six straight hits off the righty, who then exited the game in favor of Lee Ridenhour (1-4).

With Clearwater trailing 4-0, the Threshers began to scrape together a comeback in the fourth. Roman Quinn got it going with a bunt single, and proceeded to steal second base. Serna singled to center to drive him home.

An inning later, Brian Pointer walked with one out, and Angelo Mora ripped a triple to center to plate Pointer. Mora would score on Malquin Canelo's RBI groundout to make it 4-3.

The Threshers pulled even in the sixth inning, after a single, error, and walk loaded the bases with one out. Gabriel Lino then sent a sacrifice fly to center to bring the teams to a 4-4 tie.

The Cubs were quick to respond, as Dan Vogelbach's home run off Ridenhour in the sixth put Daytona back in front, 5-4.

In the nightcap, the Threshers brought home the game's first run when Serna doubled and Pete Lavin singled him home in the first inning.

Daytona then roared back with four runs off Luis Paulino (0-1) in the bottom half, and four more in the second inning.

An Art Charles sacrifice fly got one back for Clearwater in the fourth, and the Threshers loaded the bases with nobody out in the sixth inning. They would close the gap with an RBI groundout from Chris Swauger and a sacrifice fly from Charles, but would fall short of the comeback.

The Threshers and Cubs will square off for their second-straight doubleheader on Sunday, with game one set to begin at 4:35 p.m.
