Threshers Stunned by Blue Jays Late, Fall 2-1 in Ten Innings

CLEARWATER, Fl - Despite holding a 1-0 lead in the ninth, the Clearwater Threshers fell 2-1 in ten innings to the Dunedin Blue Jays in the six-game series opener on Wednesday afternoon at BayCare Ballpark.
Left-hander Scott Moss, on a MiLB Rehab from AAA Lehigh Valley, made the start on the mound for Clearwater. Moss allowed no runs on no hits, walking four and striking out two in 2.2 innings of work.
The Threshers (9-16, 44-46) broke the scoreless tie in the seventh, using a two out walk by catcher Arturo De Freitas, a wild pitch and an RBI single by Micah Yonamine to make it 1-0.
Right-handed closer Rodolfo Sanchez entered in the ninth for the Threshers, but blew the save opportunity and allowed one run on two hits that allowed the Blue Jays (12-12, 40-50) to tie the contest 1-1.
After the Threshers went down in order in the bottom of the ninth, the Blue Jays scratched across the go-ahead run with an RBI single by Estiven Machado in the top of the tenth off reliever Alex Garbrick.
The Threshers ended up going down in order again in the home portion of the 10th with three flyouts, stranding the automatic runner placed on second and falling 2-1. The home team finished with only four hits and left 11 runners on base.
Clearwater will look to bounce back on Thursday afternoon as they face off with Dunedin in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. Both games will be seven innings and right-hander Starlyn Castillo (0-2, 19.06 ERA) is set to start the first contest for the Threshers, with lefty Gabriel Cotto (2-2, 4.42 ERA) is scheduled to start the second game. Coverage on the Threshers Broadcasting Network will begin at 3:50 p.m.
