Threshers Shut Out by Blue Jays

Clearwater Threshers News Release

CLEARWATER, Fla.- The Threshers ran into one of the league's best pitchers on Friday, as Clearwater suffered a 5-0 loss at home against Dunedin.

The Threshers had been averaging just under six runs per game over their last four outings, but had issues against Jays' starter Matt Boyd (4-0), striking out 12 times against the lefty.

The Threshers started to get something going in the second inning when Harold Martinez led off the frame with a double off the right-centerfield wall. After advancing on a William Carmona fielder's choice, Martinez was left stranded at third when Art Charles and Logan Moore both struck out to end the threat.

Brian Pointer was the last Thresher to reach base, dropping down a two-out bunt single in the third inning.

D'Jays' pitching would go on to retire the next 19 Clearwater batters.

Brody Colvin (0-1) made his first appearance since joining the Threshers from AA Reading and tossed three innings, giving up just two hits, but allowed two runs.

Colvin's blemish came in the first inning after he surrendered a lead-off single to Dwight Smith, Jr. Dalton Pompey followed with another single and KC Hobson walked to load the bases with nobody out.

Marcus Knecht drove in Smith from third with a sacrifice fly to right-center, and Kevin Patterson brought home Pompey with a fielder's choice to the mound.

Colvin would retire Derrick Chung on a fly ball to left to end the Blue Jays' threat.

Luis Paulino also made his first appearance for Clearwater this year after coming down from Reading. He took over for Colvin and went 3.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out three.

Paulino left the game with runners at the corners and was relieved by Lino Martinez.

Martinez walked the first two batters he faced and allowed a run to score before getting Knecht to ground into an inning-ending double play.

The Blue Jays (16-5) would tack on two more runs in the ninth to extend their lead to five.

The Threshers will look to take game three of the series on Saturday night at Brighthouse Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and all the action can be heard on threshersbaseball.com starting at 6:15 p.m. with Threshers Live! the pregame show.
