Clearwater Threshers News Release
DUNEDIN, FL -- The Clearwater Threshers kicked off the 2014 season on Thursday with a 7-0 loss against the Dunedin Blue Jays at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. Three different Threshers turned in multi-hit games, but Clearwater could not overcome an early 6-0 deficit on Opening Night.
Colin Kleven (0-1), who made three appearances for Clearwater last year before a back injury sidelined him for the remainder of 2013, got the Opening Day nod for the Threshers. The right-hander worked the front four innings, and was charged with six runs on seven hits, walking two and picking up three strikeouts.
The Blue Jays broke out on the board early on, grabbing the first run of the season off Kleven in the first inning.
Dwight Smith Jr. singled to left to lead off, and with Smith running on the pitch, Dalton Pompey pulled a single to right to set up men at the corners with nobody out. Kleven got K.C. Hobson to roll a grounder to second, but the fielder's choice allowed Smith to come down the line and score the first run of the season for the Blue Jays.
After Matt Boyd (1-0) set seven Threshers down in order to start the game, it was Logan Moore who delivered the first hit of the year for Clearwater.
Moore sent a hard grounder up the middle on a payoff pitch in the third, resulting in Clearwater's first baserunner. Casey Serna followed with an infield single in his inaugural plate appearance for the Threshers, but a strikeout and flyout would leave both runners stranded to end the inning.
Dunedin added two runs off Kleven in the third inning, powered by a Marcus Knecht run-scoring double to deep center that made it 3-0 Blue Jays.
The D-Jays would add a three-spot in the fourth inning to open up a 6-0 lead.
Rehabbing Phillies right-hander Mike Adams tossed a scoreless fifth in relief for the Threshers, permitting a single but striking out two.
Lino Martinez turned in a solid relief performance in his Clearwater debut, as the lefty surrendered just an unearned run across three innings out of the pen. Martinez scattered a pair of singles and issued one walk, but managed to work out of a first-and-second, one-out spot in the eighth inning by inducing a double play grounder off the bat of Pompey.
Boyd earned the victory for Dunedin, holding Clearwater off the board through seven innings. The left-hander limited the Threshers to five hits, all of which were singles, and did not allow a walk.
Moore finished with two hits in his three trips to the plate, and Serna followed suit with a pair of singles of his own. Pete Lavin also finished 2-for-4.
The Threshers are set to open up their home schedule at Bright House Field on Friday for Opening Night Presented by Regions, with a post-game fireworks show to follow. The game can also be heard live on threshersbaseball.com beginning at 6:15 p.m., with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m.
