Threshers Fall 12-4 at Home

CLEARWATER, FL - Despite grabbing two runs in the ninth, the Clearwater Threshers (72-37, 28-16) dropped their first game of the series 12-4 in a loss against the Dunedin Blue Jays (51-59, 19-25) on Wednesday night at BayCare Ballpark. The Threshers look to bounce back on Thursday evening in Clearwater against the Blue Jays.

Dunedin opened the game with four runs in the first inning to take an early lead. Zach Arnold started a rally in the third for the Threshers with a two-out double off Dunedin starter Yondrei Rojas. Cole Moore singled up the middle to score Arnold from second and cut the deficit to 4-1.

The Blue Jays put together their second four-run frame in the fifth to extend their advantage to 8-1. Jace Bohrofen added another run with a leadoff homer in the sixth to extend the Blue Jays lead to 9-1. The Threshers put their first three batters on in the seventh, with Ty Penner reaching after being hit by a pitch from Blue Jays reliever JJ Sanchez, Troy Schreffler drawing a walk, and Chad Castillo singling to load the bases. Emaarion Boyd grounded into a double play to allow Penner to cut the lead down to 9-2.

Bohrofen led off the eighth with a home run and the Blue Jays added a second run to bring their lead up to nine at 11-2. They added another homer in the ninth to extend their lead to double digits. The Threshers began a ninth-inning rally with a one-out walk to Chad Castillo. He scored on a triple by Boyd to make it 12-3 before William Bergolla hit a single off Josh Mollerus to plate Boyd and bring the deficit down to 12-4. Clearwater loaded the bases in the ninth but didn't add another run in a 12-4 loss

Jean Cabrera allowed eight runs on eight hits with four walks and four strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Daniel Harper allowed one run on three hits in 1.1 innings with one walk and two strikeouts. Nathan Karaffa allowed two runs on two hits with one walk allowed in 2.0 innings. Jaydenn Estanista allowed one run on one hit in 1.0 inning with two strikeouts.

Arnold had two or more hits in each of his last three games...Penner's double was his first extra-base hit as a Thresher...All but three Threshers batters drew a walk...Boyd hit his fourth triple of the season in the ninth...The Threshers continue their six-game series against the Dunedin Blue Jays on Thursday, August 17...
