Three Three-Run Innings Lead to Victory

The Calgary Vipers tallied three separate three-run innings in defeating the Orange County Flyers 9-8 at Goodwin Field in Fullerton, California. Early in the game Calgary put up six runs in the first two innings and then added three more in the fifth frame. The offense was led by Colin Moro and Drew Miller who both hit three run homers. Moro was three-for-four in the game with three runs batted in and two runs scored. With the victory the Snakes are now 25-13 and will celebrate the first half Golden Baseball League North Division pennant in style with a win.

Jorge Mejia also had a big night at the plate going two-for-three with two runs scored and batted in while Caonabo Cosme went three-for-four with two runs scored.

On the mound Andy Torres (1-0) won his first start as a Viper going five innings while Jon Huizinga (5) recorded the save in pitching the ninth inning. Also out of the bullpen Alan Webb, Andrew DeMott, and Todd Moser did not allow any earned runs with Webb going two-thirds of an inning, DeMott a inning and a third, and Moser a inning. Adam Johnson (1-5) took the loss in the game in giving up nine runs in five innings.

Calgary jumped onto the scoreboard with two outs in the top of the first inning as Jorge Mejia walked, Colin Moro singled, and Drew Miller clubbed his third home run of the season for a 3-0 advantage.

The Vipers doubled their lead an inning later as Dillon O'Krane and Mark Okano walked and with two outs Cosme singled, Mejia drove in two with a base hit, and Moro also singled in a run for a 6-0 lead.

Orange County responded in the bottom of the inning as Robert Fick walked, Julian Benavidez singled, Juan Senreiso walked, and with the bases loaded, Travis Becktel singled in one, Benavidez scored on a wild pitch, Frank LoNigro hit a sacrifice fly for a third tally, and David Bacani plated a fourth run with a base hit for a 6-4 score.

The Flyers got within one run in the bottom of the fourth as Becktel tripled and scored on a wild pitch for a 6-5 game.

In the next half inning the Snakes increased their narrowing lead as Cosme and Mejia both singled and Moro lined his fifth big fly of the season for a 9-5 advantage.

Benavidez got a run back for Orange County in the home half of the fifth as he hit a solo home run for a 9-6 score.

The Flyers scratched across another run in the bottom of the seventh as Jimmy Rohan singled, Senreiso reached on a fielding error, Becktel singled to load the bases, and Rohan scored on a double-play that was hit into by LoNigro for a 9-7 score.

Orange County once again got within one run in the ninth inning as Rohan singled, moved to second base on a Senreiso groundout, and scored on a Steve Boggs singled for a 9-8 final.

The Vipers play their final first half game on Tuesday July 7th at 8:05 PM MDT with Joe Sergent (3-3) on the mound. On Wednesday July 8th at 8:05 PM MDT the Snakes wrap up a ten-games-in-nine-days road trip against the Flyers with Hideki Nagasaka (2-0) toeing the rubber.

Calgary returns home to Foothills Stadium on Friday July 10th at 7:05 PM MDT when they host the Yuma Scorpions for a three-game series including games on Saturday July 11th at 5:05 PM MDT and Sunday July 12th at 1:35 PM MDT. On Friday it will be Mexican Night at the ballpark, on Saturday is Movie Night as Sandlot will be shown on the big screen after the game, and on Sunday it is Bark at the Park and Little League Day where fans can bring their dog to the game and all Little Leaguers get in for free at the Stadium.
