Three Players Make NC Courage Debut in 4-1 Loss to Houston Dash
Houston, TX - In their third match of the NWSL Fall Series, the North Carolina Courage fell 4-1 to the Houston Dash at BBVA Compass Stadium on Sunday night. Lynn Williams recorded the lone goal for the Courage, her second of the Fall Series. Havana Solaun, Ari Romero, and Sinclaire Miramontez made their debuts for the Courage during the match.
With 16 minutes gone in the first half, Shea Groom had a dangerous, close-range shot attempt that was punched over the net by Courage goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland. Rowland's key save kept the score deadlocked at 0-0 in the opening minutes of the match.
In the 30th minute, the Dash were awarded a corner kick. Kristie Mewis took the kick, playing a quick one-two pass with a teammate, receiving the ball once again, and dribbling to the goal line. Mewis played in a cross that was tapped in by Dash midfielder Sophie Schmidt, giving Houston a 1-0 advantage late into the first half.
Seven minutes later, the Courage defense had a turnover near the box. Pouncing on the opportunity, Dash forward Veronica Latsko took a touch into the box and scored on a close-range shot to extend Houston's lead to 2-0 as the first half wound down.
Houston added a third goal in the 60th minute when Mewis received a drop pass from Latsko outside of the Courage eighteen. Mewis buried the shot, rendering the score 3-0 in favor of the Dash.
Working to recover the deficit, the Courage maintained possession and began connecting passes in the final third. Their efforts were finally rewarded when Ryan Williams lofted a cross into the box, finding the head of Lynn Williams. Williams redirected a looping header past Houston goalkeeper Jane Campbell and into the upper ninety, bringing the score to 3-1.
In the 83rd minute, Groom recorded Houston's fourth goal of the night. Mewis played a ball across the box that Groom ran into the net. The assist was Mewis' third of the night.
