
Three Players Join 'Caps

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The Detroit Tigers and West Michigan Whitecaps announced today that RHP Gibbs Wilson has been sent to extended spring training in Lakeland, Fla. and three players have been added to the Whitecaps roster. On Thursday, the Whitecaps placed outfielder Cameron Maybin and RHP Jay Sborz on the disabled list.
Two pitchers and one outfielder have been added to the Whitecaps roster to bring the number of active players back to 25. RHP Josh Rainwater will join the Whitecaps from the Lakeland Tigers, RHP Lavon Lewis has been called up from extended spring training and outfielder Michael Hernandez was signed as a non-drafted free agent. Both pitchers saw time with the Whitecaps in 2005.
Rainwater has appeared in five games for the Lakeland Tigers and compiled an 0-2 record with a 6.17 ERA. He started four games and pitched 23.1 innings, gave up 18 runs (16 ER) while striking out nine and walking seven. Lewis returns to West Michigan after spending the latter part of 2005 with the Whitecaps. He joined the team on June 14 of last season and was 2-0 with a 2.38 ERA in 24 relief appearances.
Outfielder Michael Hernandez was signed by the Tigers on March 17 as a non-drafted free agent and will make his professional debut with the Whitecaps. He played at the collegiate level with Oklahoma State University in 2005. He hit .299 in 44 games with 31 RBIs 36 runs scored, 16 doubles, three triples, six home runs and four stolen bases for the Cowboys.
