July 31, 2018 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Vermont Mountaineers News Release

Montpelier, VT - Vermont had Winnipesaukee down to their last strike three separate times in the top of the ninth inning, but Winnipesaukee would eventually come back to win the game, 8-7.

Vermont would start quickly, plating two runs in the bottom of the first. After reaching on a single and advancing on a throwing error, Bryce Kelley (Rockford, MI/ Michigan State) would move to third on a sac bunt and score on a sac fly from Ronald Medina (Bronx, NY/ Keystone). Nate Grys (Sterling Heights, MI/ Western Michigan) would also come around to score on an RBI single from Liam McGill (Wakefield, RI/ Columbia), giving Vermont the 2-0 lead.

After Winnipesaukee scored one in the second, Vermont would extend the lead to 4-1 on Grys' sixth homerun of the year, a run job in the bottom of the third. Vermont would tack on a run in both the fifth and sixth, while the Muskrats added two in the sixth and one in the seventh. The game would enter the top of the ninth with the Mountaineers leading 6-4.

It was the top of the ninth where the defense fell apart for Vermont. After striking out the first batter, Ryan Leckich (Port Neches, TX/ Baylor) would make a throwing error on a flip to first base. The next batter would ground into a fielder's choice, bringing the tying run to the plate with two outs. Two Muskrat singles would load the bases. Reagan Teegarden (Bellavue, WA/ Virginia Tech) would pop a ball up in foul territory, but another error from McGill allowed him to stay at bat. He would line a single to right center, plating the tying run. The next batter would strike out, but two runners would score on a dropped third strike, giving Winnipesaukee the 8-6 lead.

Vermont would attempt a comeback in the bottom of the 9th. Kelley and Paul Witt (Harper's Ferry, WV/ VCU) would each single to lead off the inning, but Grys would strike out for the first out. Following a wild pitch, Medina would ground out hard to short, scoring Kelley. McGill would walk, but Samuel Duran (Melbourne, FL/ Nova Southeastern) would strike out to end the game.

The loss for Vermont went to Leckich, who threw one inning, giving up four runs (zero earned) on two hits while striking out two. The win for Winnipesaukee went to Will Treuel (Wolfeboro, NH/ Bryant), throwing two innings, giving up one run on three hits while striking out two.

Vermont (20-23) wraps up their season Wednesday with one final home game against North Adams (15-27). Both teams are officially eliminated from playoff contention. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30, and can heard on CBS Sports 1240 or online via the NECBL Broadcast Network.
