Three more Aces in the fold

March 6, 2003 - Central Baseball League (Central League)
Alexandria Aces News Release

Alexandria manager R.C. Lichtenstein added three more Aces to his deck of cards Thursday, with the signing of infielder Kip Harkrider and pitchers Steve Wilkerson and Samone Peters.

Harkrider, a left-handed hitting shortstop, was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the fifth round of the 1997 draft after three All-American seasons at the University of Texas. He played two seasons at Double-A San Antonio [1998 and 2000], sitting out the 1999 season after surgery. Harkrider was also a member of the 1996 bronze medal-winning U.S. Olympic team.

Right-handed pitcher Steve Wilkerson set a career high with five wins last season for the Western League’s Yuba-Sutter Gold Sox. He was drafted in the third round of the 1993 draft by the Cincinnati Reds, staying in the organization through the 1995 season. Wilkerson sat out two years before returning to the game in 1998, spending time in the Northeast and Western Leagues.

Peters, a 6-foot-8 first baseman, will try his hand at pitching for the first time since junior college. The Cincinnati Reds organization drafted him in the 25th-round of the 1997 draft. Despite impressive power numbers Peters progress has been hampered by strikeouts, fanning 386 times during the 1999 and 2000 seasons. He led the Midwest League in 2001 with 28 home runs for the Dayton Dragons.

The Aces now have 11 players under contract for the 2003 Central Baseball League season.

Lichtenstein is in San Antonio, Texas, scouting potential players at the Central League’s spring tryout camp. The Aces have the 11th and 12th picks in the post-camp dispersal draft.

The Central Baseball League is an independent league of ten professional teams located throughout four southern states. The league is preparing for its 10th season this summer with teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Rio Grande Valley (Harlingen), San Angelo, Robstown and Ft. Worth, Texas; Alexandria and Shreveport, Louisiana; Springfield/Ozark, Missouri and Jackson, Mississippi. The CBL will play a 96-game schedule between May and August 2003.
