(Rochester, NY)... Rochester Knighthawks John Grant, Andrew Turner and Pat O'Toole were selected today as starters for the Eastern Division team at the 2005 National Lacrosse League All-Star Game. The contest will be played in Calgary on Saturday, February 26th and will air live on NBC at 2:00 p.m. Eastern.
Grant is currently second in the NLL in goals (18) and is tied for fourth with 33 points (18+15) in five games. He is Rochester's all-time leading scorer with 211 goals, 228 assists and 439 points. This summer, he won the Mann Cup with the Peterborough Lakers and the Heritage Cup with Team Canada. Grant was the first pick overall in the 2000 NLL Entry Draft and was named the Rookie of the Year in his inaugural season.
Andrew Turner heads to the all-star game for the second straight season. He was named a reserve for the 2004 game played in Denver. The K-Hawks' alternate captain is in his sixth season with Rochester. He ranks fourth on the team's all-time penalty minute list (161). In 2000-01, he won the team's seventh man award. Turner was Rochester's second-round selection (eighth overall) in the 1999 NLL Entry Draft.
O'Toole will be the starting goalie for the Eastern Division for the second straight year. He will also be making his third all-star appearance, having played in the 2004 and 2002 NLL All-Star Games. This season, O'Toole has registered a 3-2 record and leads the league with 214 saves. He is also tied for first in wins, and is second in goals-against average (9.80) and save percentage (.814). This summer, he won the Mann Cup with the Peterborough Lakers.
The Eastern and Western starters were selected by a combination of fan ballots, media votes and selection by coaches and general managers. The respective head coaches will select the reserves. On Tuesday, the NLL announced that Calgary Roughnecks head coach Chris Hall would lead the Western Division All-Stars in the 2005 All-Star Game.
The coach of the Eastern Division All-Star Team is still up for grabs and Knighthawks Head Coach Paul Day is in the running. The Eastern Division head coach is yet to be determined, with one game separating the five teams heading into Week #7. The head coaches of the second place teams following this weekend's games will become the assistant coaches of the All-Star teams in their respective divisions.
Day could coach in his fourth NLL All-Star Game. His last appearance was in 2004, as he served as the assistant coach for the NLL Eastern Division All-Star team that won the NLL All-Star Game 19-15. He was named an assistant coach for the North Team at the 2002 NLL All-Star Game and was the head coach of the victorious NLL Canadian All-Star Team at the inaugural NLL All-Star Game in 1999.
The Peterborough, Ontario, native has a career 68-35 record and is the all-time leader in wins in NLL history. He also owns the distinction of being the longest tenured coach in the league, having served as the head coach of the Knighthawks since 1998. In seven seasons, he has guided Rochester to three appearances in the NLL Finals. He was rewarded in 2003 with a two-year deal as the team's head coach and assistant general manager.
Day has been with the K-Hawks since the team's inception, serving as the assistant coach from 1995-97. In '97, he was behind the bench for Rochester's Major Indoor Lacrosse League title.
The Knighthawks host the Philadelphia Wings on Saturday, February 12th at The Blue Cross Arena at the Rochester War Memorial. Rochester (3-2) enters the contest tied for first in the Eastern Division with the Buffalo Bandits (3-2). The 7:35 p.m. game will be broadcast on News Talk 950 WROC and knighthawks.net.
