
Three Home Runs Not Enough in Clinton Loss to Quincy

QUINCY, ILL- Three home runs were not enough for the Clinton LumberKings in a loss Saturday night to the Quincy Gems.
It was the second consecutive game between the Clinton LumberKings and the Quincy Gems. After a 4-1 victory on Friday night, the Clinton LumberKings jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Saturday. In the top half of the third Adam Weed (University of Illinois Chicago) drove in Nick Fleckenstein (Lassen CC) with an RBI single. On the same play, Trevor Burkhart (LSU-Shreveport) scored on a throwing error by catcher Otto Jones (Washburn).
Trailing 2-0 the Gems scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth. The frame was highlighted by RBI hits from Maurice La Fon (Harris-Stowe St) and Tye Wood (Iowa Western CC).
After cutting the lead to just two in the top of the sixth, the LumberKings knotted things up in the seventh. Connor Giusti (UW-Oshkosh) hammered his second home run of the season, a two-run blast making it 5-5.
In the eighth, Luke Ira (South Dakota St) and Jeremy Conforti (College of DuPage) went back-to-back, giving the LumberKings a 7-5 advantage. Clinton's second and third home runs of the evening.
Once again Maurice La Fon did damage for the Gems. In the bottom of the eighth, La Fon hit a solo homer for the Gems, cutting the Clinton lead to just one.
In the bottom of the ninth, with the bases loaded, Cole Conner (Oakton CC) walked Jonathan Latham (Indiana University Kokomo) tying the game at seven. Once again that brought Maurice La Fon to the plate. Clinton brought in Tyler Stern (Mount Mercy), Stern walked La Fon, bringing the winning run home for the Gems, giving Quincy the 8-7 victory.
The LumberKings now head to Burlington, Iowa to take on the Bees on Sunday afternoon.
First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
