
Three Goal Third Lifts Aeros Past Checkers

HOUSTON --- A three-goal third period capped another comeback effort for the Houston Aeros in a 5-3 win over the Charlotte Checkers at Toyota Center on Sunday. The victory pushed Houston into sole-possesion of first place in the AHL's Western Conference.
Carson McMillan bagged the game-winner with 2:10 remaining in regulation as the Aeros battled back after allowing three Charlotte goals in the middle stanza. David McIntyre added an empty-netter to seal the win.
After spotting the Checkers a three-goal second period, the Aeros rallied in the third starting with Casey Wellman's 5-on-3 power play goal at 5:59 in the third period to tie it at 3-3.
Jeff Taffe had a goal and an assist and Wellman scored his team-leading eighth goal. Dennis Endras made 30 saves for Houston while captain Jon DiSalvatore dished out two assists.
Taffe put the Aeros ahead 1-0 at 10:35 in the first period with a power play goal. After Justin Soryal tied the score at 1-1 at 3:30 in the second period, Kris Foucalt put Houston back on top with his third goal of the season at 10:53 in the second.
Charlotte tied it at 2-2 with a 5-on-3 power play goal by Jon Matsumoto at 18:27 in the second. They took a 3-2 lead with another 5-on-3 power play goal, this time off the stick of Jerome Samson at 19:08 in the second. Mike Murphy had 19 saves for Charlotte.
The Aeros hit the road for two starting Thursday at Lake Erie at 6 p.m. before heading to Hamilton for a rematch of the 2011 Western Conference finals Friday at 6:30 p.m. Houston returns to Toyota Center next Sunday against Toronto at 5:05 p.m.
BOMB DROPPINGS The Aeros are unbeaten in regulation in the last six outings (4-0-0-2) and are unbeaten in regulation at home this season (3-0-0-2)... Casey Wellman has a goal in three straight games and a point in each of the last six games (4-2=6)... Jon DiSalvatore has an assist in four straight games and at least a point in six straight games (1-7=8). DiSalvatore leads the Aeros with seven assists... Chay Genoway has an assist in three consecutive games... The Aeros have stung the Checkers for three goals in the final 20 minutes twice this season. The last time was a 3-2 win at Charlotte on Oct. 21.
