
Thompson's Homer Shoots Down Shorebirds

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (Aug. 7, 2011) -- Trayce Thompson blasted his team- leading 18th home run of the season in a five-run third inning that powered the Kannapolis Intimidators past the Delmarva Shorebirds 8-3 on Sunday evening at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. The Intimidators held on to first place in the SAL Northern Division second half standings, a half game over Hickory, with the win.
Kannapolis overcame an early 3-0 deficit with five runs in the third. With one out, Collin Kuhn walked and scored on Keenyn Walker's triple, his first extra-base hit since joining the Intimidators. Carlos Sanchez drew a walk, and Marcus Semien singled home Walker to pull Kannapolis within a run. Two batters later, Thompson's two-out, three- run blast put the Intimidators ahead for good, 5-3.
Terance Marin earned the win tossing three relief innings. Marin (3-0) allowed two hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Chris Bassitt entered a three-run game in the eighth inning and threw two scoreless frames for the save (1).
Phil Negus started the game on the mound for Kannapolis and tossed four innings, allowing three runs on four hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts. Negus did not factor into the decision in his seventh start of the season, and Kannapolis improved to 7-0 when Negus starts.
Rafael Vera led off the bottom of the fourth with a double and scored on a Jarret Martin wild pitch. Martin worked four innings, allowing five runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Vera added a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth to stretch the Intimidators lead.
Delmarva took an early lead on Jacob Julius two-run triple in the first inning. Riley Hornback was hit by a pitch to lead off the second inning, and Mike Mooney singled him home for a 3-0 that held up until the bottom of the third.
