Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
(Waldorf, MD.) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (3-9) won the series opener against the Road Warriors (4-10) 2-0, behind a gem on the mound from Daryl Thompson (2-0).
The Blue Crabs threatened first in the ballgame, loading the bases in the second inning. Frank Martinez doubled, before back-to-back walks filled the bases. Jose Gonzalez came up with one out in the inning, before Felix Baez (1-2) forced a groundball, allowing his defense to turn a double play behind him and escape the jam.
Thompson was dominant on the mound for the Blue Crabs, allowing just two hits through the first five innings. A leadoff single from Gustavo Pierre got the fifth inning started with a baserunner for the Road Warriors. The left-fielder stole second two batters later, before Thompson was able to strand the runner in scoring position.
The offense finally struck for Southern Maryland in the bottom of the fifth, putting up a pair of runs. After two quick outs, Joey Wong kept the inning alive with a two-out line drive single to right field. Ryan Strausborger followed that with a two-run homerun to left field. Strausborger's first homerun of the season would break the scoreless tie, and give Thompson a 2-0 lead.
Two runs would prove to be all Thompson would need, as he continued to shut down the Warriors offense on the mound. The veteran retired the final 12 batters he faced, tossing eight scoreless innings. The lead was then turned over to Ryan Chaffee (S,2) looking to secure the victory. Chaffee worked a 1-2-3 top of the ninth, locking down his second save and the win for both Thompson and the Blue Crabs.
The Blue Crabs return to action Saturday, May 12th for the second game of the three-game home series against the Road Warriors. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M. on Saturday at Regency Furniture Stadium.
