Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, Kan. - Tony Thomas smashed a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Wichita Wingnuts snapped a six-game losing streak with a 7-6 victory over the Kansas City T-Bones on Sunday afternoon at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
The Thomas hit came with two outs off T-Bones reliever Carlos Diaz (1-2), scoring Logan Watkins from third. The inning started when Watkins reached on an infield single, advanced to second on a throwing error by shortstop Angel Rosa, then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Zach Nehrir. Kansas City attempted to intentionally walk Abel Nieves, but the first pitch from Diaz stayed over the plate and was grounded sharply off Diaz for what appeared to be a game-ending base hit. The umpires conferred and determined that time had been called, and the pitch did not count. The walk was completed to Nieves, then after a pop up by Fernando Perez, Thomas came through with the Wingnuts first walk-off of the season.
The T-Bones (12-9) jumped out to a 6-1 lead against Wingnuts starter Casey Harman, scoring single runs in each of the first four innings and then adding two in the fifth. Dexter Kjerstad capped off the barrage with a two-run home run in the fifth, part of a three-hit afternoon.
The Wingnuts (11-11) began the comeback with four runs in the fifth against T-Bones starter Lucas Irvine. Perez smacked a two-out RBI single, then Thomas cranked a three-run homer to straightaway center that trimmed the deficit to 6-5. Ryne Willard tied the game at 6-6 in the sixth with a solo blast of his own, before both bullpens tossed up zeroes in the seventh and eighth.
Daniel Tillman (1-2) earned the victory for the Wingnuts with a scoreless top of the ninth.
The Wingnuts now take to the road for a seven-game southern swing, beginning with a four-game series against the Cleburne Railroaders. First pitch of game one on Monday is scheduled for 7:05 PM, and will be broadcast on 1410 AM/93.9 FM KGSO, TuneIn and americanassociationbaseball.tv.
