Harrisburg Heat News Release
Harrisburg, PA - For the second time in as many nights and fourth time in the Harrisburg Heat's last five home games, the team played an overtime contest; but unlike Saturday night's 10-8 overtime loss to Baltimore, the Heat used a 2pg from Ato Leone at 8:28 of the extra stanza to take a 12-10 overtime win over the visiting San Diego Sockers at the Farm Show Arena on Sunday night. The loss ends a four-game losing streak for the Heat (now 5-7 on the year). Doug Petras (16 saves) is credited with the win in goal - in doing so, he becomes the tenth goalkeeper in league history to reach the century mark in victories.
As expected in a battle between two of the league's lowest-scoring offenses, this game was a defensive clash through the first half. Thanks to 2pgs from David Bascome (7:06 of the first) and Marco Lopez (2:27 of the second), Harrisburg led 4-0 at intermission.
The Sockers appeared to take control of the game with an assertive third quarter in which they outscored the Heat 8-0, courtesy of 2pgs from Gaston Pernia (7:07), Anthony Farace (10:30), Carlos Farias (14:30), and Matt Stewart (14:53). San Diego led 8-4 going into the fourth quarter.
But Harrisburg, eager to find the win column again, answered with three 2pgs within the first four minutes of the fourth. Genoni Martinez scored a pair of deuces just 17 seconds apart (at the 52-second and 1:19 marks) to tie the game at 8-8. Just over two minutes later, at 3:38, Ze Roberto scrapped for a loose ball in the crease and pushed home a 2pg, and Harrisburg led 10-8.
Nearly seven minutes passed with the Heat in the lead before MISL scoring leader Carlos "Chile" Farias, a former Heater, headed home a double at 10:22, tying the game at 10-10. As neither team was able to find the net for a decisive goal in regulation, a familiar sudden-death overtime scenario loomed.
The Heat captured the win at 8:28, when Bascome played a snappy give-and-go with Leone in the left corner. From a tight angle, Leone squeezed a rolling shot between Sockers keeper Nick Vorberg (19 saves in the loss) and the post, and Harrisburg celebrated the 12-10 win.
NOTES: Genoni Martinez (2 2pgs) and David Bascome (2pg, 2 assists) led the Heat with four points apiece ¬Â¦Harrisburg blocked 18 shots on the night, led by Oswaldo Medina's five rejections. Medina also recorded an assist in the game ¬Â¦The Heat returns to action next Saturday, December 7 when the Cleveland Force comes to town (7:35 p.m.) The first-place Philadelphia KiXX then make a trip to the Farm Show Arena on Sunday, December 8 for a 6:05 p.m. kickoff.
