PEORIA, Ill. - The Peoria Rivermen (32-14-3) scored two goals in the third period while holding the Mississippi RiverKings (27-18-2) to just one shot in the final 20 minutes to turn a 1-1 tie into a 3-1 win Friday night at Carver Arena.
The game was scoreless after the first, despite Peoria outshooting the RiverKings 17-7 in the opening period. Peoria got on the board just over halfway through the second period when Mike Gurtler tipped in a pass from Ryan Raven on a 2-on-1 rush, giving the Rivermen a 1-0 lead. The RiverKings tied the game with 2:30 to go in the second, when Leo Thomas scored a 5-on-3 power-play goal. Thomas went to the bottom of the left circle and sent a puck towards Linden Bahm near the crease, but it popped into the net for a 1-1 tie.
The Rivermen took control in the third period and grabbed their second one-goal lead when Josh Harris fired home a shot on another odd-man rush while on a delayed penalty. That came a 4:40 of the third period and it made it 2-1 Peoria. The Rivermen would score on another 2-on-1 between Raven and Gurtler. This time Raven took the shot from the right circle and beat Peter Di Salvo past the glove for a 3-1 lead. Di Salvo would end with 38 saves in the loss, while Kyle Rank stopped 14 of 15 RiverKings shots, a new season-low for Mississippi.
Notes: The RiverKings have 11 power-play goals in their last 10 games... Leo Thomas extended his scoring streak to three games (2g, 5a) with his second-period power-play goal... Matt Whitehead recorded an assist on Leo Thomas' power-play goal and extended his scoring streak to four straight games (4g, 4a).
