ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Washington Wild Things took a six-run lead in the first inning and went on to a 20-14 win over the Rockford RiverHawks.

Chris Carter's RBI single three hitters into the game opened the floodgates. Pat O'Brien and Andy Hudak each hit two-run homers later in the top of the first, in front of 1,524 at Marinelli Field.

In the third inning, Washington sent 17 batters to the plate and scored a Frontier League-record 13 times to turn the game into an early blowout. The previous league of 12 had been set by the Springfield Capitals in 1997 and matched by London in 1999.

The Wild Things led, 20-2, after 4½ innings.

The RiverHawks rallied in the second half of the game with a 12-0 scoring run. Rockford scored four times in the fifth inning, three times in the sixth, four in the seventh and once in the eighth.

Brian Burks (4-0) gave up six runs on 10 hits in five innings, but got the win. Rockford starter John Richards (1-1) was gone before the end of the second inning.

The RiverHawks are off Monday and begin a three-game series against Evansville at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday. At 5 p.m., coaches and players will host the Saturn of Rockford Youth Clinic, exclusive for members of Rocko's Kids Club. Club membership is just $10 and includes a free club T-shirt and tickets to selected games.

The RiverHawks are the defending champions of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 13th season. All games are broadcasted live on WRHL-FM, 102.3 - the Hub.
