Thiessen's Heroics Lift Monsters to 2-1 Victory
March 23, 2017 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
CLEVELAND - The AHL's defending Calder Cup Champions, the Cleveland Monsters, proudly powered by Constellation, defeated the Chicago Wolves in a shootout on Wednesday at The Q by a final score of 2-1. With the win, Cleveland's third consecutive victory, the Monsters are now 30-27-3-4 and with a .523 points percentage, remain alone in sixth place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
The Wolves grabbed a 1-0 lead at 9:50 of the opening frame when Brett Sterling lifted an in-close backhand over the right pad of Cleveland backstop Brad Thiessen. In the second, Cleveland wasted no time in equalizing as Zac Dalpe forced home a right-circle wrister just 20 seconds into the period on even-strength feeds from Ryan Craig and Jaime Sifers to level the score at one apiece.
After a scoreless final period and overtime frame, Markus Hannikainen tallied in the top of the first round of the Monsters' tenth shootout of the season for Cleveland before Thiessen denied the AHL's leading scorer, Kenny Agostino, in the bottom of the round. Dalpe came through again for the Monsters in the second round before Thiessen slammed the door on Chicago's Andrew Agozzino in the bottom of the frame to deliver Cleveland a 2-1 victory, the Monsters' third consecutive triumph.
Thiessen improved to 3-6-1 in net for Cleveland by virtue of a 45-save performance while Chicago's Jordan Binnington is now 14-6-7 after stopping 32 of the 33 pucks he faced in defeat.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Friday home clash vs. the Iowa Wild with full coverage, live from The Q, underway at 7:00 pm on 99X and the Monsters Hockey Network.
