BURLINGTON, VT --- Pack up the rollaways, tents and sleeping bags.
"Slumper Party" is over.
The Vermont Expos snapped its 12-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over Mahoning Valley in New York-Penn League action Saturday night at Centennial Field, ending the sleepovers in the Expos dugout for General Manager C.J. Knudsen and the Vermont front office staff.
Tim Sweeney was 2-for-4 with three RBI to key the Expos offense, while starter Jeremy Plexico (1-1) allowed just three hits with seven walks over 5.2 scoreless innings to pick up the victory.
Sweeney had a two-run single in the second to give the Expos a 2-0 lead, which Vermont increased to 5-0 with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Four of Vermont's five runs in the game were unearned as Mahoning Valley committed three errors.
Sweeney singled home Brad Ditter in the fourth inning after Ditter had gone from first to third on a thrown away pickoff attempt. Ditter gave the Expos a 4-0 lead with a two-out RBI single in the fifth, while David Lutz scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning after reaching on a fielding error.
The Scrappers runs came in the ninth inning, but Roberto Martinez retired the final two batters of the game to give the Expos the victory and their first win since June 22nd.
Jesus Colmenter had two of Mahoning Valley's five hits, while Scott Roehl allowed four runs (one earned) on five hits over five innings to take the loss for the Scrappers (11-8). Franklyn Jimenez had one hit to extend his hitting streak to six games.
The win puts an end to the campouts in the Expos dugout. Knudsen had spent seven nights sleeping in the first base dugout at Centennial, followed each night by another member of the Vermont front office. They will all be sleeping in their own beds Saturday night.
The two teams will play game two of the three-game series Sunday evening at Centennial Field beginning at 5:05 p.m. Devin Perrin (0-2) will start for Vermont on A Salute to Heroes Night at the Ballpark. All emeregency workers (fire, police, EMT) and military servicemen with ID will be admitted free to the 5:05 p.m. game.
