The Richmond Raiders Top Alabama 62 to 44

Richmond Raiders News Release

Richmond Raiders quarterback Antwon Young passed for five touchdowns and ran for one on the way to a 62 to 44 victory over the visiting Alabama Hammers Saturday night at the Richmond Coliseum. Fullback Anthony Sutton scored twice on rushing plays and defensive lineman Brandon Sutton picked up a fumble by Alabama quarterback Arvell Nelson and took it six yards into the end zone to round out the scoring for Richmond.

Statistically, Richmond and Alabama looked fairly even offensively on the night. Alabama ran 42 plays for a total of 235 yards and Richmond ran 42 for 292. But Richmond's defense came through on a number of crucial plays, forcing turnovers in the form of a fumble and a pass interception, and stopping drives short on enough occasions to create an 18 point spread by the end of the evening.

Richmond wide receiver Jason Lovett had an outstanding evening with seven receptions for 105 yards and a touchdown, and Maurice Thorne thrilled the crowd of 2912 with a pass interception deep in his own end zone that he returned the entire length of the field, breaking tackles and eluding pursuers, only to have the touchdown called back on a personal foul penalty.

Next week the Richmond Raiders travel to Lake Charles Louisiana to take on the Louisiana Swashbucklers. They will return to the Coliseum on May 5 in a rematch against that team.
