The Gold Hit the Road this Weekend to Take on D.C.
NOLA's six-game road trip begins now.
On Saturday night at the Gold Mine on Airline, the NOLA Gold lost a tightly contested match (8-7) to ATL Rugby after Andriaan Carelse's penalty goal in the 72nd minute gave ATL a one-point lead they would not relinquish.
The 15 total points in the match was the combined lowest total in the 2021 Major League Rugby season, and the Gold's seven points was their lowest point total this season. After Jeremy Misailegalu scored a try for ATL and the conversion was missed (13'), Cam Dolan's try and subsequent conversion by Damian Stevens (40') put the Gold up 8-7 going into the halftime break.
However, after multiple second-half defensive stands by ATL at the one-meter line, Carelse's penalty goal (72') for ATL allowed the defensive-minded team to emerge victoriously.
NOLA dominated the game statistically as they outgained ATL with 519 meters to their 287 meters. Additionally, the Gold dominated the possession battle, out-possessing their opponents 67% to 33%.
ATL struggled with their lineouts, only winning 38% of their own attempts. On the other hand, the Gold thrived in their lineouts, winning 87% of their opportunities.
Both defenses dominated the game throughout as there were only 21 combined missed tackles by both clubs. ATL led the way with 15 missed tackles, but made 180 total, leading to a made tackle percentage of 92%. The Gold missed six tackles during the contest but had only 74 tackles, less than half of ATL's total.
The game was filled with turnovers by both clubs. NOLA Gold led the way with 19 turnovers conceded while the Gold was only able to force their opponents into 15 giveaways.
The NOLA Gold continues their season next Saturday, June 12th, opposing Old Glory DC at Segra Field in Washington D.C. The game will take place at 4:00 PM CST and will be televised locally and streaming FREE on The Rugby Network. This game will be the first of NOLA's six-game road trip to end the regular season.
