The Goalie Hat Trick
January 20, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
Corpus Christi- The Corpus Christi Rayz of the Central Hockey League have announced that Brent Belecki has been named the CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week of January 13th through January 19th. This is the third time this season that Belecki has won the award with all three times coming in the last five weeks. He joins Austin's Matt Barnes and Indianapolis' Shawn Silver as the only three-time recipients of the award this season.
The native of Calgary, ALB steered the Rayz to 3 wins in 4 games this week, a week widely considered to be the toughest of their schedule with road games in Amarillo and New Mexico before a back-to-back home weekend with San Angelo and Lubbock. After surrendering three goals in a 3-0 loss to Amarillo on Tuesday, Belecki was outstanding giving up just one goal in each of the next three games, all Rayz victories. In addition to his 3-1 record, Belecki had a goals against average of 1.50 and a save percentage of .950%.
Belecki is currently playing his best stretch of hockey this season. In his last 16 starts, all consecutive, Belecki is 10-6 and has allowed just 34 goals (2.12 GAA) while turning aside 482 of 516 shots in that span, a save percentage of .934%. Belecki is now 18-15-1 for the season and is just three wins shy of tying the Rayz single-season record for wins by a goaltender held by Jason Genik and teammate Eddy Skazyk. The Rayz won just 16 games all of last season.
