Saints Week in Review
January 20, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
San Angelo Saints News Release
Coming Up This Week â The Saints continue their long January slate of road games at Odessa on Friday night and at Austin on Saturday night.
Week In Review â The Saints went 0-2-0 this week with road losses to Bossier-Shreveport on Thursday night and Corpus Christi on Friday night.
Saints in the City â The Saints players continue to participate in Awards Ceremonies for all the San Angelo elementary schools' Accelerated Reader Programs. The team is also trying to gear up our Grades for Blades program in the elementary schools for the February report cards. Today the team presented a check for $250 to the local DARE Program â money the students earned selling chuck-a-pucks at a previous game. San Angelo's Catholic Bishop Michael Pfeifer today also presented the Saints a portrait of Saint Michael the Archangel that was the basis for the Saints' new logo.
January 16th / San Angelo 0 - Bossier-Shreveport 8 / Despite not playing very well in the 1st period the Saints were still in the game, trailing just 2-0. But, 2 goals in the first 2 minutes of the 2nd period by the Mudbugs effectively put the game out of reach. The Mudbugs weren't done, though â adding three more 2nd period goals and Forbes MacPherson's 3rd period goal that completed his hat-trick for the night. Jason Campbell added 2 goals and an assist as 6 different Mudbugs had multi-point games. It was a low point of the season for the Saints who were also out-shot 45-34 and could not get a single puck by Mudbugs goalie Ken Carroll who recorded the shut-out.
January 17th / San Angelo 1 - Corpus Christi 5 / The Rayz scored a fluky goal on their first shot of the game and it was downhill from there for the Saints as they dropped their 4th game in a row. Despite generating several good scoring chances, the Saints were held scoreless until late in the 3rd period when Kori Davison's shot from the right-wing boards bounced off a couple of defenders into an open net. Rayz Captain Ken Richardson recorded a hat-trick and All-Star forward Cosmo Dupaul had a 5-point night against the struggling Saints in a game marked by 20 combined penalties. The Saints were again out-shot 43-36.
Playoff Picture â The Saints didn't help themselves this weekend in the race for the final playoff spot in the Southern Conference. Currently Lubbock and Corpus Christi are tied for the 4th spot with 41 points each with New Mexico at 37 points and the Saints at 30. To get back into the race the Saints will have to drastically improve on their 3-14-3 road mark as the team remains mostly on the road through February.
Injury Report â Jamie Thompson has been placed on the season ending injured reserve. Jason Abel is on the 45-day injured reserve with a hernia. Corri Moffat is expected back soon, possibly this weekend. Several other Saints have missed time due to recent injuries including Kelly Miller and Kori Davison â and the Saints continued to play this week with only 4 defensemen and only suited 14 skaters against Corpus Christi.
