Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release

(Allentown, PA) - The Lehigh Valley IronPigs are pleased to announce U.S. pig and hog inventories were again near record-highs in 2008 -- a trend that has now continued for the past three years, according to a recent report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. With the good news, the IronPigs are looking to thank their fans for their support last season with a celebration during National Pig Day weekend (which begins February 28). Stay tuned...

"News coverage of the sluggish economy has overshadowed such positive stories as the 'proliferation of the pig'... and we want to celebrate the good news," said IronPigs General Manager Kurt Landes, a recognized Friend of Pigs. "We are pleased that Pennsylvania is in the top 25% of states in terms of pig and hog population. Now for 2009, we are hoping to crack the Top 10 - and maybe even a BCS berth in 2010!"

In March, the U.S. Department of Agriculture will conduct its first quarterly pigs and hogs survey of 2009 to see if the trend continues this year. Survey results will be published in the quarterly Hogs and Pigs report, to be released March 27 - 13 days prior to the IronPigs' Opening Day 2009 on April 9 at Coca-Cola Park. The report will include inventory and breeding information for each of the 17 largest hog producing states (of which Pennsylvania finished 12th in 2008).

Announcement of the IronPigs celebration in anticipation of National Pig Day expected to come much sooner.
