
Ten man Battery scores come-from-behind victory versus Silverbacks

Charleston SC. The Charleston Battery defeated the Atlanta Silverbacks tonight at Blackbaud Stadium by a score of two goals to one in front of 4,444. The Battery fought back from behind with ten men after midfielder Ugo Okoye was ejected in the 36th minute. Atlanta opened the scoring just after half-time but goals from Justin Evans and Jesus Martinez earned Charleston all three points.
Atlanta had the first chance of the game in the 18th minute. Forward Rodrigo Rios slipped a pass through the Battery defense to veteran midfielder Alex Chacon. Chacon controlled the ball then swept his right-footed shot wide of the target.
Charleston was reduced to ten men in the 36th minute after midfielder Ugo Okoye was called for a second yellow card following a late challenge on defender Greg Chevalier.
Just before half-time Charleston had a chance to take the lead. Midfielder Josh Smith lifted a cross in from the right side but Boyzzz Khumalo's snap header rose above the cross-bar.
Atlanta scored the opening goal in the 49th minute. Antonio DeLatorre whipped a corner in from the left flank. Forward Gary Brooks met the cross and flicked a header into the goal from six yards out.
Charleston fought back and in the 71st minute team captain, Justin Evans equalized. Ted Chronopoulos sent in a deep corner that Evans controlled on the chest before lashing a half-volley past Atlanta keeper Christian Fegler.
With two minutes remaining the Battery scored the winner. Chronopoulos drove in a deep free-kick from wide on the left side. Rookie defender Ben Hollingsworth headed back across the face of the goal to substitute forward Jesus Martinez. Martinez controlled the ball then angled a shot past Fegler and into the goal.
The Charleston Battery completes its two-game weekend series on Sunday with a 4 PM match versus the Richmond Kickers at U of R Stadium, Richmond (WSC 730 AM / www.charlestonbattery.com).
