Vancouver Whitecaps News Release

Overview:

The Whitecaps wave continues to roll as Vancouver defeated the visiting Virginia Beach Mariners 3-1 Friday at Swangard to remain undefeated on the season. Jason Jordan netted the winner in the second half, while also adding an assist. Jordan is now the league's leading scorer with 8 goals and 1 assist. Midfielder Steve Klein also had a goal and an assist, and was named UMBRO Player of the Game

The Whitecaps record is now 4-0-2 for 14 points, which moves them into second place overall, tied with the Montreal Impact. This is the best start to the season for Vancouver since 1992. Virginia Beach drop to 1-7-3 and remain in 6th place.

There's little rest for the Whitecaps as they head off for a game Sunday May 29 in Minnesota against the Thunder. The game kicks off at 5:00pm and can be heard live on TEAM 1040 radio. The Caps then return home to host the Portland Timbers on Friday, June 10 at Swangard.

Scoring Summary:

16' V.B. Dave Castellanos

Castellanos intercepted a sloppy pass in the Vancouver penalty area, fought off a challenge from Nick Dasovic, and then rolled the ball between the legs of Mike Franks.

30' Vanc Tino Cucca (Jason Jordan)

Jordan controlled a long ball at the top of the area, twisted, turned, then laid it off for Cucca who accelerated into the box and fired past the keeper for his first professional goal.

52' Vanc Jason Jordan (Steve Klein)

Klein sent a through ball to Jordan who outraced the Mariners defence and lifted the ball over the keeper for his league-leading 8th of the season.

56' Vanc Steve Klein (Jeff Clarke)

Clarke deep on the right whipped in a great cross and Klein ran in to head it down and in, leaving the keeper no chance. It was the midfielder's first goal as a Whitecap.

Game Notes:

Jason Jordan wasted little time introducing himself to the visitors, as just five minutes in he got a slick pass from Carlo Corazzin at the top of the box, and broke in on goal, only to be denied by goalkeeper Matt Nelson, who came out quickly to make the save.

The Mariners' goal in the 16th minute marked the first time all season that Vancouver has trailed in a game.

Mike Franks made a number of great saves late in the game, as Virginia Beach kept pressing. His best saves were of a quick shot by Dave Castellanos in close at 75', and then he made a superb one-handed stop off Hamisi Amani-Dove at 87'.

Steve Kindel subbed into the game at 57' to extend his consecutive game streak to 42.

Newly signed Whitecaps midfielder Ryan Trout came on at 74' for his first game with the team.

Virginia Beach forward John Barry Nusum came on at 69'. The Bermuda native is a nephew of Sam Nusum, who was the Whitecaps very first goalkeeper back in 1974.

This is the best start to the season for Vancouver since the team left the Canadian Soccer League in 1993. Vancouver was 5-0-1 to the start the 1992 CSL season. The longest undefeated streak to start a season is 18 games back in 1989.
