San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (May 27, 2008) - San Jose SaberCats' quarterback MARK GRIEB and defensive back MARQUIS FLOYD were today honored by the Arena Football League as Offensive and ADT Defensive Player of the Week for their performances in the team's playoff-clinching win over Colorado on May 24.
Grieb (6-2, 215, UC Davis) completed 23-of-30 passes for 271 yards and a Week 13-high eight touchdowns as the SaberCats clinched their ninth consecutive playoff berth with a 59-42 win over Colorado on Saturday. Grieb led San Jose on scoring drives on nine of the teams 12 possessions, including six consecutive, while reaching a passer rating of 129.3. His eight touchdown passes also lifted him over the 70 plateau for a seventh consecutive season.
Floyd (6-2, 192, West Georgia) registered seven tackles, two passes defensed and his team-leading ninth interception in the win. He recorded a key pass breakup on third-and-goal from the SaberCats three-yard line on the final play of the third quarter forcing a fourth down. San Jose would create a turnover on downs, notching its fourth defensive stop of the game. The turnover would result in a field goal on the SaberCats next drive, pushing the lead to 10 points. With less than three minutes remaining in the game and Colorado driving, Floyd intercepted a John Dutton pass and returned it 48 yards to seal the victory.
The awards mark the first time in franchise history that teammates were honored as Offensive and ADT Defensive Player of the Week from the AFL in the same week. Grieb earned his seventh weekly award while Floyd captured his first.
Dallas' Will Pettis was named Ironman of the Week for a third time this season after accounting for four scores in the Desperados 67-41 win over Orlando.
A premiere franchise in the Arena Football League, San Jose has won three ArenaBowl championships and captured seven Western Division titles, nine consecutive playoff appearances and owns the league's best regular season record this decade.
