Team effort extinguishes Flame

ASHEVILLE, N.C., December 14, 2004 - Six Altitude players scored double-digits as Asheville cruised to a 114-98 victory over the Florida Flame Tuesday night at the Asheville Civic Center. NBDL scorer leader Antonio Meeking posted his second double-double performance of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

"We are fortunate that this team has a lot of chemistry and guys that can contribute," said Asheville?s Lenny Stokes.

Both teams fired up the nets during the first quarter, shooting for over 60 percent from the field. But it was the Altitude who continued their hot shooting in the second quarter, connecting on 13-of-22 baskets, and extending their lead to 26 points. By the end of halftime the Altitude had scored 62 points, an NBDL record in first half play.

The Altitude dominated the entire game, shooting at least 50 percent from the field in each quarter. Unselfish plays continued as the team recorded their second 30-team assist?s performance of the season.

"Although we didn?t play as well as I would have liked on the defensive end, we maintained consistency and strong intensity on the offensive end the entire night," said Altitude head coach Joey Meyer. "

The Flame rallied in the second half pulling to within 11 points but Asheville proved to be in command, increasing the lead back to 20 points with four minutes left in regulation. Byron Mouton led the Flame with 16 points off the bench, connecting on 10-of-12 baskets from the free-throw line. Kendall Dartez and Darius Rice added with 15 points apiece and Kirk Haston contributed 11 points in addition to two steals and two blocked shots.

Asheville?s Lenny Stokes also posted 18 points for the night, shooting a blazing 80 percent (8-of-10) from the field. Altitude sixth-man Ron Slay scored 17 points and six rebounds off the bench and Kirk Penney chipped in with 14 points and six assists. Tony Kitchings posted 12 points in addition to a career high four assists and Brandin Knight registered 11 points and a game-high seven assists in the team?s first meeting.

Both teams with meet again Thursday, Dec. 18 at the Germain Arena in Fort Myers, Florida. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
