Buffalo Bandits News Release
Buffalo, N.Y. (April 5, 2005) --- The Buffalo Bandits announced today John Tavares has been named the National Lacrosse League's Co-Player of the Month for March, marking the second time this season that Tavares has received this award. Leading the Bandits to a 3-2 record during the month, Tavares recorded 14 goals and 18 assists for 32 points, while collecting 37 loose balls in five games. Tavares shares the honor with Toronto goaltender Bob Watson.
"I'm really happy for John," stated Bandits General Manager Kurt Silcott. "This has been a season of awards and milestones for him, yet he still maintains his focus on the team concept and winning games. He has been a great ambassador of the sport of lacrosse and I'm glad to see that all his hard work over the years continues to pay off."
Since the award's inception in 1994, only three times in league history has a player won two of the three Player of the Month awards during a season. Tavares has accomplished the feat two of those times (February and March in 1996, January and March 2005), while Colorado's Paul Gait holds the third distinction (January and March in 2002). Four Player of the Month awards were given out during the 2002 season instead of three.
The Toronto, Ontario native began the month with a six-point (G, 5A) performance against the Toronto Rock on March 4th. He scored a game-high 10 points (5G, 5A) - including his 500th career goal - at Minnesota on March 11th. Playing Minnesota again the next weekend in HSBC Arena, Tavares snagged 4 points (3G, A) on March 18th. He followed that performance with a eight-point (3G, 5A) effort against Rochester the following night on March 19th. In the final game of March, Tavares scored 4 points (2G, 2A) versus Toronto on March 26th.
The Mississauga high school teacher currently leads the NLL in scoring (92), ranks second in assists (53) and third in goals (39).
Silcott also announced the team elevated midfielder Kyle Jamieson to the active roster and placed defenseman Tyler Francey on injured reserve. All transactions are subject to league approval.
In four games with Buffalo during the 2005 season, Jamieson registered a goal and an assist, while logging 15 penalty minutes. The Six Nations, Ontario native has appeared in 26 career games, recording 28 points (6G, 22A) and 25 penalty minutes.
The Bandits next home game will be against the San Jose Stealth at the HSBC Arena on Saturday, April 16, 2005 at 7:30 PM. Ticket packages are available by calling the Buffalo Bandits Ticket Office at 1-888-467-2273, or fans can purchase packages at the HSBC Arena Box Office or any Tickets.com locations.
