Tarantulas add defenseman to fold

Topeka, Kansas, August 3, 2004 – The Topeka Tarantulas of the Central Hockey League have signed four-year professional defenseman Andy Fermoyle, head coach Joe Coombs announced today.

With the exception of five games Fermoyle has played his entire professional career with the Quad-City Mallards of the United Hockey League. During his stint in the UHL, Fermoyle scored 16 goals, with 72 assists for 88 points in 243 games. He also sat out 264 minutes in penalty time.

In 2002-03 Fermoyle played one game for the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League with two penalty minutes. The following season he played four games for the Portland Pirates, of the AHL, with two penalty minutes.

In 34 UHL playoff games Fermoyle scored one goal and assisted eight times for nine points, while sitting out 45 penalty minutes.

When asked what Tarantula fans should expected from him Fermoyle said, “I’m not flashy, but I’m hard working. I take pride in going up against the opponent’s top line”.

Fermoyle said he expects Coombs to pair him with a younger defenseman. When asked what advice he will give to his younger teammates the 28-year old native of Warroad, Minnesota said “I will tell them how to adjust to a longer schedule if they have just finished their college career”.

The 6’ 2”, 202-pound defenseman admits it was tough leaving Quad-City where he won a Colonial Cup championship during his rookie season but said, he is looking forward to playing for Coombs of whom he said “he is an honest, good guy with a lot of enthusiasm”.

Before playing professional hockey Fermoyle played three seasons at Minnesota State University-Mankato where he scored five goals and 17 assists in 113 games. He majored in elementary education and hopes to someday coach high school hockey in Minnesota.
