Tampa Deals Miracle An 8-3 Loss to Start Series

TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Yankees defeated the Fort Myers Miracle, 8-3, at Steinbrenner Field on Wednesday evening.

After an 91-minute delay, the Yankees jumped out to a three-run lead in the first inning. After Miracle starter Keaton Steele struck out Mason Williams to begin the first, Thairo Estrada singled through the left side. Trey Amburgey then bounced a hit base a diving Chris Paul at third base. With two on, Zack Zehner doubled down the third base line for two RBI. Abiatal Avelino then knocked in Zehner with a grounder up the middle, 3-0.

Fort Myers got one run back in the top of the second. With two outs, Alex Perez lifted a ground rule double that bounced over the fence in left. Daniel Kihle muscled an 0-2 pitch from Tampa starter Will Carter into center field for a hit. Perez scored to cut the Tampa lead to 3-1.

In the top of the third, Trey Vavra sliced another run off the Yankees advantage. With one out, LaMonte Wade laced a single up the middle. After Carter (2-3) struck out Nick Gordon, Vavra roped a first pitch into the left field corner and Wade scored from first, 3-2.

The Yankees answered with three runs in the third. After Avelino earned a lead-off walk from Steele (4-8), Devyn Bolasky tripled to knock in Avelino. Bolasky then crossed home when Vicente Conde recorded a sacrifice fly to right. Connor Spencer continued the inning with a base hit to left. Steele got Francisco Diaz to pop out in foul territory for the second out, but Mason Williams singled. Estrada then hit a ground ball to the right side hole. Alex Perez fielded the ball to his left, but the throw to first was in the dirt and Spencer scored, 6-2.

Steele exited the game after giving up six runs on 10 hits with two walks and two strikeouts through three innings.

Spencer drove in a run in the fourth off Miracle reliever Michael Theofanopoulos. With two outs, Spencer rolled a grounder through the right side to plate, 7-2.

Carter went six innings for the Yankees and surrendered two runs on seven hits. In the seventh, the Miracle got a run off reliever Caleb Frare. Brian Navarreto led off with a double into left field and advanced to third on a T.J. White fly out to center. Wade then recorded a sacrifice fly to center and brought in Navarreto, 7-3.

Tampa got the run back in the seventh when Williams picked up his third hit, an RBI single to left with two out, to put the Yankees back up by five, 8-3.

The Miracle (46-43, 12-8) battle the Yankees (52-37, 10-10) at Steinbrenner Field at 7 p.m. Randy Rosario (5-5) is slated to start for the Miracle against James Reeves (0-1) for Tampa.
