Tampa Bay Storm News Release
TAMPA BAY - The Arena Football League has announced that defensive back Jeroid Johnson has been named AFL ADT Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in Tampa Bay's 55-51 victory against the Austin Wranglers. He registered six-and-a-half tackles, four passes defensed and one interception in the win.
Johnson, 5-foot-10, 180-pounds, is in his first season with the Tampa Bay Storm and his eighth overall. Johnson's game-saving interception came with eight seconds remaining in the game with Austin driving from the Storm 20-yard line. Johnson intercepted a pass from Wranglers quarterback Lang Campbell on the one-yard line and returned it 33 yards to the Austin 16-yard line to secure the victory.
"J.J. had a good game and should have had three picks if it was not for penalties," said Storm Head Coach and General Manager Tim Marcum. "He has the toughest job in Arena Football covering the high motion man and he does a great job."
Other weekly winners included Philadelphia Soul's quarterback Tony Graziani (Offensive Player) and Dallas Desperados' wide receiver/defensive back Will Pettis (Ironman).
ADT Defensive Player of the Week candidates included Chicago's DeJuan Alfonzo and Dennison Robinson, Columbus' Jerald Brown, Philadelphia's Mike Brown and Gabe Nyenhuis, Tampa Bay's Traco Rachal, Utah's J'Sharlon Jones, Ryan Dennard and Orshawante Bryant, San Jose's Clevan Thomas and Steve Watson, and Dallas' WR/LB Bobby Perry.
The third seeded Tampa Bay Storm (9-7) will host sixth seeded Columbus Destroyers (7-9) in the National Conference Wild Card Round Saturday, June 30 at 12:00 p.m. EST on Bill Currie Ford Field at the St. Pete Times Forum. Tampa Bay defeated Columbus 34-32 in an exciting Week 9 match-up as Traco Rachal knocked down a two-point conversion in the final seconds of the game to seal the victory for the Storm. ESPN will televise the game and 620 WDAE will broadcast the game live. For Storm playoff tickets call 813.301.6780 or visit www.tampabaystorm.com.
