TAMPA BAY LOOKS TO AVENGE EARLY-SEASON LOSS TO FORCE

Saddled with a three-game losing streak, the Tampa Bay Storm will once again attempt to get back into the win column when they travel to Atlanta to take on the Georgia Force. But in order to do that, they will have to find a way to win away from home. The Storm are 0-3 on the road this season following last weekend's 54-43 loss at Carolina. The Storm and Force are familiar foes, as the teams faced off in Week 2 of the season, with the Force scoring a 70-62 victory. If the Storm are to snap their losing streak, they will have to figure out a way to handle Georgia's quick strike offense, which includes playmakers such as Leon Murray at quarterback, Markeith Cooper at offensive specialist, and wide receivers Dameon Porter and Dialleo Burks. All were instrumental in Georgia's win over Tampa Bay early in the season.

BIG THIRD QUARTER OUTBURST BY COBRAS SINKS STORM

The Carolina Cobras outscored the Tampa Bay Storm 24-0 in the third quarter to turn a 29-21 halftime deficit into a 45-29 advantage. Tampa Bay cut the Carolina lead to eight points in the fourth quarter and had the ball, but the Storm offense could not put together a potential game-tying drive in the final moments. The Storm dropped their third straight game despite outgaining the Cobras 278-169 in total offense. The Cobras, however, made up for it on special teams, returning two kickoffs for touchdowns and recovering a kickoff off the net in the endzone for another score. Tampa Bay quarterback Pat O'Hara completed 25-of-43 passes for 279 yards and six touchdowns, but he was also victimized by two interceptions. Lawrence Samuels and Clif Dell had big games offensively, with Dell catching six passes for 115 yards and three touchdowns and Samuels adding nine catches for 80 yards and two touchdowns.

THIRD QUARTER MELTDOWN

After rallying late in the second quarter to go on top 29-21 at halftime, the Tampa Bay Storm seemed to be heading in the right direction last Sunday afternoon against Carolina. But the Storm's momentum screeched to a halt sometime during the halftime break, and Tampa Bay's comfortable lead quickly turned into a deficit.

Leading by eight, the Storm received the opening kickoff of the second half and drove down to the Carolina 10-yard line. But, before Tampa Bay could reach the endzone, Carolina lineman Otis Moore stepped in front of a Pat O'Hara screen pass, returning the interception to midfield. On the next play Carolina scored on a 25-yard touchdown play to pull to within one point at 29-28.

TT Toliver returned the ensuing kickoff to the Carolina 20-yard line, but the Storm could manage just six yards on the next four plays, turning the ball back over the Carolina without putting any points on the board. Carolina would add a 26-yard field goal, and then after again forcing the Storm to turn the ball over on downs, the Cobras added a four-yard touchdown pass to lineman Sean Trembley to push their lead to 38-29.

The final Carolina score of the quarter came on the ensuing kickoff, as Toliver failed to field the ball off the net and Jack Walker pounced on it in the endzone, giving the Cobras a third touchdown in the quarter.

When the smoke cleared and the final seconds of the third quarter ticked off the clock, the Cobras found themselves leading the defending ArenaBowl champions 45-29. The Storm's third quarter struggles were nothing new to Tampa Bay in 2004. This season the Storm have been outscored 107- 70 in the third quarter.

FROM ONE EXTREME TO ANOTHER

Speaking of the Storm's scoring, or lack thereof, in certain quarters, Tampa Bay has seemed to be a team that follows distinct scoring patterns this season. The Storm have routinely struggled in the first quarter, with opponents outscoring Tampa Bay 77-52 in the first 15 minutes. Then, in the second quarter, the Storm seem to regain their composure and have been able to whittle away at their opponents' leads with a 108-81 scoring advantage. As mentioned, the third quarters, though, have belonged to the opponents. The fourth quarters of Storm games have been played relatively even, with the Storm holding a slight 93-88 scoring advantage.

BACK IN THE ENDZONE

Storm wide receiver/linebacker Lawrence Samuels has gotten off to a fast start to the 2004 season, but, with the scoring propensity of offensive specialist Freddie Solomon, his touchdown reception numbers have been lower than normal. Last week, however, Samuels was able to get back into the endzone, catching a pair of touchdown passes. The touchdown receptions gave Samuels five for the season. They were the first receiving touchdowns for Samuels since a Week 4 touchdown catch against the Philadelphia Soul. His twotouchdown performance also marked the first time Samuels had multiple touchdowns in a game since he caught two touchdown passes in Week 2 against the Georgia Force.

TAKING A BREAK

Tampa Bay Storm offensive specialist Freddie Solomon has been torching opposing defenses this season, but last Sunday against the Carolina Cobras Solomon was forced to miss the game because of a shoulder injury. The game was the first that Solomon had missed since an Achilles injury forced him to sit out the entire 2002 season.

Despite missing the game, Solomon still holds a slight lead in the overall league scoring race. Solomon has 19 touchdowns through seven weeks of the season, giving him 114 points scored this season. He leads a pack of three players who each have scored 108 points – Arizona's Siaha Burley, Las Vegas' Marcus Nash, and Colorado's Damian Harrell.

DELL FILLS IN NICELY

Freddie Solomon's misfortune was Clif Dell's gain on Sunday, as Dell replaced Solomon as the team's offensive specialist. Dell did well for himself in the new role, catching six passes for 115 yards and three touchdowns. The 100-plus yard performance by Dell marked the first time that Dell had over 100 receiving yards as a member of the Storm.

His previous high was 80 yards. He came just shy of reaching his career high of 132 receiving yards, which he accomplished in 2002 against Grand Rapids. The three receiving touchdowns tied a career high, matching a feat he'd accomplished on three previous occasions.

EVERYONE GETTING A LOOK

Though quarterback Pat O'Hara's stats in the past two games have been good, the Storm have lost both games in which the veteran quarterback has started, prompting head coach Tim Marcum to reevaluate the quarterback position. Marcum announced this week that O'Hara, Shane Stafford, and Stoney Case would all get a chance in practice to prove that they should get an opportunity to start against the Force. A decision on the starter will be made prior to the game on Saturday night.

Stafford started the first five games of the season, completing 94-of- 157 passes for 1,106 yards. He had 22 touchdown passes during that span and tossed five interceptions. The Storm are 2-3 in games Stafford has started. O'Hara came in in relief of Stafford against New Orleans in Week 5 and then started the next two games. He is 63-of- 112 this season for 701 yards with 11 touchdowns and two interceptions. Case has yet to be active for a game this season.

KICKER MERRY-GO-ROUND

The Storm will have a new kicker when they tee it up against the Georgia Force on Saturday night, the third kicker employed by Tampa Bay this season. Mike Black was released on Tuesday after failing to hit the net on each of his eight kickoffs last week against the Carolina Cobras. Black also missed an extra point in the contest, his third missed extra point in four games.

The Storm started the season with Ian Howfield as their kicker. Howfield lasted three weeks before he was released and Black was signed. Black played in four games for Tampa Bay. Last season the Storm went through a team-record six kickers en route to the ArenaBowl championship.

TAKE IT TO THE HOUSE

Whether it's the kickoffs not getting to the net, bad tackling, players not filling their lanes, or a combination of the three, the Storm have had problems covering kickoffs this season. Carolina exploited that weakness last Sunday, returning seven kickoffs for 217 yards,

including a pair of kickoff returns for touchdowns by Jarrick Hillery. The Storm have allowed a league-high four kickoff returns for touchdowns this season and are last in the league in kickoff coverage, allowing 18.5 yards per return. This week the Storm face one of the most dangerous returners in the AFL in Markeith Cooper. Cooper is second in the league with 699 kickoff return yards on 35 returns, including two kickoff returns for touchdowns. One of those came against the Storm in Week 2 when Cooper returned five kickoffs for 138 yards, including a 55-yard return for touchdown.

BACK IN ACTION

One of the differences between the play of this year's Storm team and that of last season's team has been the lack of a consistent pass rush. A big part of that missing rush returned to the lineup against the Carolina Cobras last weekend, as Kelvin Kinney was activated from the injured reserve list. And though he did not record a sack, the game did mark the first contest this season in which Kinney has been able to play the entire game. He started the season opener against Orlando but left early after re-aggravating a groin injury he originally suffered in training camp. Then, after sitting out against Georgia in Week 2, Kinney attempted to play in Week 3 against Austin but left the game in the first quarter. He then resided on the team's injured reserve list until this past week, when he played against Carolina.

Kinney's return took on added significance after it was learned that Nyle Wiren, the Storm's leader in sacks this season and one of the best pass rushers in Storm history, may miss the rest of the season with a torn shoulder labrum. Wiren was placed on the team's injured reserve prior to the Carolina game and may require season-ending surgery.

RUNNING NOWHERE

Since rushing for 31 yards in the season opener against Orlando, the Tampa Bay Storm's offensive rushing attack has struggled. The Storm enter the week ranked 16th in the league in rushing offense, averaging 13.3 rushing yards per game. Last week at Carolina, the Storm had -1 total rushing yards. That total is the lowest rushing total by the Storm this season and nearly tied the team record for the fewest rushing yards in a game. The record stands at -3 yards, which occurred two times in Storm history.

ROAD WOES

Seven weeks into the season, the Tampa Bay Storm are still seeking their first road win of the year. Tampa Bay is 0-3 on the road this season and has been outscored by an average of 55-45 on the road this year. Tampa bay has not scored more than 48 points away from home. Tampa Bay entered the 2004 season on a six-game road winning streak that dated back to the 2003 ArenaBowl championship season. The Storm enter Saturday night's game at Georgia with a 64- 33 all-time record away from home.

BECOMING ALL TOO FAMILIAR

For the second time in three season the Storm have started the season with a 2-5 overall record. The Storm started 1-5 in 2002 before picking up a win on the road at Indiana. The Storm then won their next game to improve to 3-5 on the season before ultimately finishing the regular season at 6-8, the first losing season in Storm history. Tampa Bay ultimately made the playoffs that season and won in the first round before bowing out in the quarterfinals. But the playoff field that season consisted of 12 teams. This season the playoff field has been reduced to just eight teams.

NEW FACES

A pair of Storm players saw their first action with the Storm last Sunday against Carolina. AFL veteran Carlos James finally took the field after recovering from a back injury that he suffered in the preseason. James played out of position in the contest, however, playing the WR/LB position in place of the injured David Saunders. James made his living in the AFL playing the WR/DB and defensive specialist spots.

Lineman DJ Bleisath also made his Storm debut. The rookie was also playing in his first-ever AFL game. He saw action at defensive end and nose guard on the defensive side of the ball and tight end on the offensive side.

NO TV

For the second straight week, the Tampa Bay Storm are not slated for television this weekend, as NBC will be taking a break from the AFL for its coverage of The Players Championship. The Storm-Force game is one of just three Tampa Bay contests not scheduled to be televised this season.

DOWN THE DIAL

Because of Tampa Bay Lightning hockey, Saturday's game against Georgia will air on 1250-AM WHNZ instead of 620-AM. Next week's game against San Jose will return to 620-AM.

O'HARA REACHES A MILESTONE

Making his first start ever as a member of the Storm and his first AFL start since the 2002 season, quarterback Pat O'Hara reached a couple of milestones in Week 6 against the New York Dragons. O'Hara threw for 264 yards in the contest, a total that pushed him over the 13,000 career passing yards plateau. He also had three touchdown passes in the game, giving him his 225th career touchdown pass.

JOINING ONE OF THE GREATS

With his interception on against Philadelphia in Week 4, Lawrence Samuels tied former Tampa Bay Storm defensive specialist Johnnie Harris for second place all-time on the Storm career interceptions list. Samuels, with 18 career interceptions, is now second to only Tracey Perkins, who finished his Storm playing days with 34 career interceptions.

Samuels joins some pretty elite company, as Perkins is one of just four players whose jersey number has been retired by the Storm and ranks fifth in AFL career interceptions and Harris has been a safety in the NFL since leaving the Storm after the 1998 season.

ANOTHER NUMBER GOES TO THE RAFTERS

At halftime of the Storm's Week 4 game against the Philadelphia Soul, the Tampa Bay Storm retired the No. 20 worn by WR/DB Stevie Thomas. Thomas is the Storm's all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. He is also second in all-purpose yards and missed field goal return yards, third in kickoff return yards and combined returned yards, fifth in interceptions, and ninth in tackles.

Thomas ranks fourth in AFL history in yards per catch, seventh in receiving yards, eighth in scoring, and eighth in receiving touchdowns. Thomas played for the Storm from 1991-1999, winning four championships with Tampa Bay. He won a fifth championship with the Orlando Predators in 2000 and concluded his career in 2001 with the New Jersey Gladiators.

MORE MILESTONES FOR SAMUELS

Tampa Bay Storm wide receiver/linebacker Lawrence Samuels hit two career milestones in the Storm's Week 2 loss to the Georgia Force and inched closer to overtaking one of the Storm all-time greats on the team's career receiving yards list.

Samuels hauled in seven catches for 79 yards and two touchdowns against Georgia. Those numbers allowed him to eclipse 400 career receptions and 5,000 career receiving yards. Samuels is second all-time in Storm history in receptions and ranks third in Storm history in receiving yards.

HALF A CENTURY

When Clif Dell hauled in his 22-yard touchdown reception in Week One against Orlando, he recorded his tenth receiving touchdown as a member of the Storm and his 50th career receiving touchdown. Dell, in his second season with Tampa Bay, scored the touchdown against his former team and the organization for which he scored 40 of those 50 touchdowns.

Dell played with the Predators from 1999-2002, with his best career season coming in his final year in Orlando. That season he caught 76 passes for 995 yards and 22 touchdowns.

NEW FACES

Though the Storm return many of the impact players from last season's ArenaBowl champion team, there are a number of new faces on the Storm's opening night roster. Of the 29 players on the opening night roster (24-man roster and Injured Reserve), 13 of those players were not with the Storm for the ArenaBowl, including seven players who played in the game against Orlando. Those players who played last week but were not on the ArenaBowl roster include QB Shane Stafford, WR/DB Jonathan Ordway, OL/DLs Evan Pilgrim and Cyron Brown, DSs Shea Showers and Del Lee, and K Ian Howfield. Others new to the roster this season include QB Stoney Case, WR/DB Carlos James, OL/DLs Emil Ekiyor, Shawn King, and DJ Bleisath, and DS Antonio Langham.

TRUE IRONMAN

Tampa Bay Storm lineman Kelvin Kinney embodies the Ironman image that the Arena Football League has come known for. Kinney, who is one of the top pass rushers in the AFL and has become one of the Storm's top pass blockers, has spent precious little time away from the football field in the past few years.

From 2001-2003 Kinney played in 94 football games, an average of over 30 games per year. In 2001 Kinney was literally rushing the passer non-stop, beginning the year with the XFL's Las Vegas Outlaws. After 10 games with them, Kinney moved on to the AFL, where he played in 11 games for the Detroit Fury. After the Fury's season was over in July, it was on to the Canadian Football League, where Kinney played in 13 games for the Toronto Argonauts. In 2002 Kinney played in 28 games, 14 with the Fury and 14 with the Edmonton Eskimos. And in the 2003 calendar year Kinney added 32 more games played, 17 with the Tampa Bay Storm and 15 with Toronto and Edmonton of the CFL.

Kinney's year-round exploits have not slowed his production at all. In what will go down as his most successful year ever as a professional football player, Kinney recorded 6.0 sacks and won an AFL championship with the Storm in 2003 and then went north to wreak havoc in Canada. Splitting time between Toronto and Edmonton, Kinney recorded 12.0 sacks and won a Grey Cup championship with the Eskimos. The 2003 CFL championship game marked the third straight championship game that Kinney played in. He was with Edmonton in 2002 for their Grey Cup loss, then followed that performance up with back-to-back championship game wins in Tampa Bay and again with Edmonton.

SUPER TIES

The 2004 Super Bowl pitted the New England Patriots and the Carolina Panthers, a matchup which featured some strong loyalties among members of the Storm. Tampa Bay's roster features three of players with ties to the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. Quarterback Shane Stafford was signed by the Patriots in January 2003 and allocated to NFL Europe by the Patriots, where he played the 2003 season. FB/LB Andre Bowden enjoyed a three-year stint from 1994-96. Antonio Langham played for the Patriots in 2000 and also played under current Patriots head coach Bill Belichick while with the Cleveland Browns in 1994 and 1995. And, while not having direct ties to the two Super Bowl teams, Storm defensive specialist Del Lee played for Belichick while both were with the New York Jets in 1999. The Storm roster also features a pair of former Panthers in linemen Darion Conner and Shawn King. King was a second round draft choice by Carolina in the 1995 NFL draft, the 36th overall selection.

BACK-TO-BACK FACTS

It has proven to be extremely difficult to repeat as ArenaBowl champions, but there is a precedent for repeating, especially when Storm head coach Tim Marcum is involved. The last team to repeat as ArenaBowl champion was Tampa Bay, who under the guidance of Marcum won back-to-back ArenaBowls in 1995 and 1996. The only other team to repeat was the Detroit Drive, which actually won three straight ArenaBowl titles from 1988-90. In two of thoses seasons – 1988 and 1989 – Marcum was the Drive's head coach. The closest a team has come to repeating as of late was the Orlando Predators, which won two titles in three seasons. The Predators claimed the 1998 and 2000 championships, with Albany downing the Predators in 1999 to avoid a repeat champion.

ARENABOWL HANGOVER?

The Tampa Bay Storm have had mixed success in the years following ArenaBowl championships. Following the team's first title in 1991, the Storm advanced to the semifinals of the playoffs, only to lose in overtime to Orlando. Following the 1993 championship, the Storm put together what was then their worst season ever, finishing 7-6 overall and exiting the playoffs after a first-round loss to Massachusetts. The Storm followed up their 1995 championship with a repeat performance in 1996, but the 1997 season saw another average campaign, as the team finished with a 9-7 overall record.

PRESEASON PROGNOSTICATIONS

The Tampa Bay Storm placed one player on the first-ever Preseason All-AFL team and was selected to finish second in the league. The two preseason "polls" were taken by the newly-formed Arena Football League Writers Association.

Lawrence Samuels was selected as the preseason All-AFL pick at the WR/LB position. Also on the team was former Storm lineman BJ Cohen, now of the New Orleans VooDoo. The Storm placed second in the AFLWA's preseason picks as the eventual ArenaBowl champion. San Jose finished first in the voting, followed by Tampa Bay, Arizona, Los Angeles, and Orlando.
