Gallup, NM. The ABA Gallup Talons professional basketball team have reached an agreement with Westward Airways for corporate sponsorship of the team. "Westward Airways is proud to be associated with the first predominately professional Native American basketball team," said Rex Roberts, the Director of Marketing at Westward. "We believe this relationship is only the beginning of the potential for this team and the city of Gallup."

Roberts also indicated that Westward's search for additional sponsors would only enhance the team's efforts and visability during the inaugural season which starts in November. "We're looking to help other businesses interested in co-sponsoring this team with exciting ticket giveaway type promotions for our routes to Albuquerque, Las Cruces, and Phoenix," said Roberts. Some elements of the agreement include corporate sponsorship, reciprocal ticket promotion, chartered 'tailgate' flights to specified away games, and the painting of the Gallup Talons' logo on the tail of one of their planes.

"This is an exciting opportunity for both of our companies," said Joseph Kolb, owner of the Talons.

Westward Airways began serving Gallup in early April with two weekday round trip flights to Phoenix and one to Albuquerque for a very reasonable price. Other flights are available on weekends as well. Westward is based in Scott's Bluff, Nebraska and serves towns and cities throughout the Western United States. The Talons will play their inaugural season this year and tryouts for the team were held this past Saturday and Sunday. No formal announcements have been made concerning the status of any players involved in this tryout. Another tryout camp will be held July 23, 24 in South Dakota.
