Gallup Talons Put New Twist On Tryouts

July 28, 2008 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Gallup Outlaws News Release

Gallup, NM. The ABA Gallup Talons have announced a new approach for prospective players to make the team for the upcoming season. "Rather than have players participate in a tryout individually," said owner Joe Kolb, "we have decided to hold a tournament where they will play with guys they are familiar with. This alleviates much of the anxiety of trying out for a pro team on your own."

Kolb said that although most teams already have an inkling who they are looking at for their roster, there are always those diamonds in the rough that can make a complete roster.

"Rather than charge $100 per player, who may have a slight chance of making the team, at least our new approach gives players an opportunity to participate in a fun, but competitive tournament, with friends, with the prospect of being asked to return for our Rookie Camp in September," added Kolb. "I think this will foster goodwill in the regional basketball community."

He said the "Good Enough to Dream Tournament" scheduled for August 16th at Miyamura High School will be a full day of 30 minute full court games. Teams are limited to 8-man rosters of players that have graduated high school.

Registration for each 8-man team is $175. Each player will receive a commemorative "The Boys are Back in Town" Gallup Talon t-shirt and one free ticket to a regular season Talon game. Awards will be given to each player on the top three teams.

The event is being co-sponsored by The Gallup Herald newspaper.

On-line registrations will be taken by submitting a roster and credit card information to ghsat@hotmail.com . Walk-in registration can be made at Herald Square, 1707 W. Hwy 66, Gallup, NM. Registration deadline is August 15th. There will be no on-site registration the day of the tournament. For more information, call 505 488 4117 or visit www.abalive.com.
