Tampa Yankees News Release

TAMPA - The Tampa Yankees (21-16) defeated the Brevard County Manatees (16-20), 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at George M. Steinbrenner Field, taking two of three in the series win.

The Yankees brought over RHP Anyelo Gomez from extended spring to make a spot start after RHP Rookie Davis was deemed a late scratch. Gomez allowed a run on three hits in four innings of work, striking out four while not surrendering walk.

Brevard County broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third. Chris McFarland led off with a triple and later scored on a groundball from Taylor Brennan.

Tampa wasted no time retaliating. Billy Fleming walked to begin the bottom of the third. Abiatal Avelino replaced him at first base on a fielder's choice. With Tyler Wade at the plate, Avelino stole second. Manatee starter Javier Salas then hit Mark Payton. Avelino and Payton pulled off a double steal and Mike Ford hit a go-ahead, two-run single into center. Salas proceeded to hit Ericson Leonora with a pitch and walk Kyle Higashioka, loading the bases. Ford then scored as Ty McFarland reached on an error at third base by Tyler Brennan, giving the Yankees a 3-1 lead.

Salas (2-3) allowed three runs on three hits in six innings, walking three while striking out five for Brevard County.

A two-out rally provided some insurance for Tampa in the eighth. Higashioka singled into center as was chased home as McFarland hit a ball off the top of the right field wall.

RHP Matt Marsh (1-0) dealt two scoreless innings in relief of Gomez. RHP Philip Walby worked around a leadoff walk in a clean seventh. RHP Angel Rincon picked up his sixth save of the season, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out three in the final two innings.
