Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (May 17, 2015) - In the most well-played game of the weekend, the Mets and Stone Crabs duked it out for most of the afternoon at Tradition Field. Whereas the first two games left little room for drama and excitement, the starting pitching matchup between German Marquez and Kevin McGowan made for a fitting ending to an impressive roadtrip. In a similar fashion to Friday night's 8-4 win, the Mets took advantage of three Stone Crabs errors and pulled away late for a 4-0 shutout to take the deciding game of the series.
Marquez and McGowan barely blinked early on, and both righthanders faced the minimum number of hitters through three scoreless innings. In the fourth, Juniel Querecuto drew a one out walk and Willy Adames lined a single into left for the Stone Crabs first hit. Jake Bauers then fell behind 0-2, eventually lining out into a double play up the middle on a ball hit behind Querecuto.
The 20-year-old Marquez had retired 10 straight after striking out Champ Stuart and Jeff McNeil looking to start the fourth. Michael Conforto then doubled off the right field wall and Maikis De La Cruz walked, but Dominic Smith flied out to left to retire the side on a ball that nearly carried over the head of Granden Goetzman. St. Lucie scored the first run in the fifth courtesy of Amed Rosario's leadoff single up the middle. A pair of groundouts to Pat Blair at second moved the shortstop to third, and Marquez got Colton Playa to roll over on a grounder to Adames at short. The ball hopped and bounced away for an error, and the Mets had a 1-0 lead on an unearned run against Marquez (2-2).
Charlotte's best opportunity came in the top of the sixth when Blair led off with a hard double to the warning track in left center. Alexander Simon then reached on a fielding error by Rosario, and Braxton Lee laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners into scoring position. Facing his last two hitters, McGowan (2-3) fanned Querecuto for the second out with a perfect fastball over the inside corner. Adames then sent a soft liner to short and Rosario stabbed it at his shoetops for the final out.
Lefthander Steve Ascher worked around a leadoff single by Rosario in the seventh, but wasn't as fortunate in the eighth. Stuart's bouncer to the shortstop hole was there for Adames, but his throw pulled Bauers up the first base line for another error. McNeil's sacrifice bunt got Stuart to second, and an intentional walk of Conforto put runners at first and second for De La Cruz. He singled on the first pitch into left for a 2-0 lead, and that was just the beginning. With runners at first and second, Ascher got a groundball to third but it ricocheted off Querecuto and into left field for Conforto to score the third run. Two batters later, Phillip Evans singled home another run and the Mets had more than enough for Akeel Morris, who completed a 1-2-3 ninth for his fourth save.
The Stone Crabs return home to Port Charlotte to start a seven-game homestand with the Jupiter Hammerheads beginning Monday night at 6:30 PM at Charlotte Sports Park.
