Syracuse Silver Knights News Release
SYRACUSE, New York - The Syracuse Silver Knights had a quick turn-around from a big win on Friday night to play in Detroit against the Waza Flo on Sunday afternoon. The two sides met for the 3rd and final time this season on Sunday afternoon with the teams splitting the first two matchups before the Silver Knights were able to get the upper hand to take a 2-1 series lead for the season.
The first quarter got off to a much slower start as both sides played with possession and were trying to find gaps in the defense, a task difficult for both sides. Both the Waza Flo and Silver Knights were having trouble getting shots off with both sides packing it in on the defensive end.
The Waza Flo were able to find the back of the net though late in the first quarter to open things up. Zach Bowman made a hustle play knocking the ball loose from Bryan O'Quinn's hands before striking it in the back of the net. The goal came off of a nice defensive clearance from Costea Decu with just 5 minutes left in the first quarter.
The second quarter saw more shooting and offense from each side, but came with no goals on either end. Both sides had power play opportunities with chances that were turned away by each defensive side in the second quarter. With the lone goal in the first quarter the Waza Flo were able to take a 1-0 lead into the lockerooms at the half.
But the second half would tell a different tale than the defensive game that was played out in the first two quarters.
Just :20 seconds into the third quarter, the Silver Knights struck the back of the net after a great clearance by Bryan O'Quinn, a hustle play by Bo Jelvoac to keep the ball alive, an then JJ Gibson was able to come in and clean it all up for his first goal of the game. Later in the third quarter the Waza Flo were able to score again on the power play with a pass that slipped through the zone and finding a wide open Waza Flo on the goal line. But the Silver Knights were not done scoring just yet as moments after the Waza Flo goal Bo Jelovac was able to score a nifty left footed goal to give the Silver Knights their 2nd goal of the game. The two teams were tied at 2-2 heading into the final quarter of the exciting matchup.
The 4th quarter provided even more excitement as the teams combined for 5 goals with the Silver Knights getting the best of it winning in Detroit 5-4. Detroit got the scoring started in the 4th quarter scoring back to back goals just 1 minutes apart giving them a 2 goal lead with just 9 minutes remaining. But the Silver Knights would not go away quietly.
The Silver Knights were able to storm back with 3 unanswered goals including a goal with just 18 seconds left by Austin Tom, his first of the season on an assist by team captain Bo Jelovac. Detroit was unable to get a shot away in the final 18 seconds as the Silver Knights were able to hold on to the late game victory!
The Silver Knights now have the week to recoup before heading out for a back to back weekend next weekend. The Silver Knights will travel to St Louis on Friday, January 15th and then to Cedar Rapid on Saturday, January 16th. The next Silver Knight home game will be on January 22n which will include a special weekend package of tickets. Call 315-303-7261 for details and to catch up on all the Silver Knight action.
