Syracuse Crunch News Release
Syracuse, NY (August 7, 2006) - The Syracuse Crunch, in conjunction with Doug MacLean, President and General Manager of the Columbus Blue Jackets, announced today that they have named Trent Cull the Crunch's assistant coach.
"Ross Yates and the organization are excited to have Trent Cull as our assistant coach," said Blue Jackets Executive Vice-President and Assistant General Manager Jim Clark, who oversees Syracuse's hockey operations for Columbus. "Trent has extensive experience as a player at the professional level. We know he will bring the same commitment and work ethic as a coach as he displayed as a player. His past two years working as an assistant coach under David Barr convinced us of his readiness to take on this role."
"Trent will be a great addition to the Syracuse Crunch, not only because of his great work ethic, but his strong communication skills," said Syracuse Crunch head coach Ross Yates. "He will be a great teacher for the young defensemen coming up through the organization."
Cull replaces Yates, who was promoted to the teams' head coach position after serving as the team's assistant coach from 2000-2006.
Prior to joining the Crunch, Cull, 32, spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach with the Guelph Storm (Ontario Hockey League). The Storm improved to 40-24-1-3 in the 2005-06 season, a 27-point improvement over the 2004-05 season.
During his stint with Syracuse from 2002-04, Cull appeared in 98 games, tallying 2 goals, 15 assists and 261 penalty minutes. A native of Georgetown, Ontario, Cull appeared in 435 career AHL games with St. John's, Springfield, Wilkes-Barre, Houston and Syracuse, registering 20 goals, 50 assists and 1,049 penalty minutes.
Originally signed as a free agent by Toronto on June 4, 1994, Cull's best professional season was in 2000-01 as a member of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, when he netted 11 goals, 26 points and 166 penalty minutes. He was a member of the Houston Aeros team that won the Turner Cup (IHL) in 1999-00 and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton team that went to the Calder Cup Finals in 2000-01.
He becomes the sixth assistant coach in Crunch history (Curt Fraser 1994-95, Ted Sator 1996-97, Glenn Patrick 1997 - 99, Barry Smith 1999-00 and Ross Yates 2000 - 2006).
Cull and his wife Marcia, have one child, Gabriel (2).
