Syracuse Battles Back-To-Back MASL Champions Baltimore

January 11, 2018 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) - Syracuse Silver Knights News Release

The Syracuse Silver Knights (5-4) return to the Oncenter War Memorial Arena as the Baltimore Blast (9-2) come to Central New York for the first time this season. Baltimore are back-to-back MASL Champions.

The Silver Knights won their last match against Florida 10-9 in overtime. Kenardo Forbes scored the game winning goal to give Syracuse its second overtime win of the season.

The Blast defeated Harrisburg 4-3 in overtime. Andrew Hoxie scored the game winning goal for Baltimore.

Here's five things to watch for on Friday's game:

1. Forbes saves Syracuse once again

Kenardo Forbes scored his second overtime goal of the season in the victory against Florida. He recorded a hat trick during the match. That performance earned Forbes his second MASL Team of the Week honor for this season.

2. Vanzela is on fire

Blast goalkeeper William Vanezla has been on fire the entire season. He has earned three MASL Team of the Week honors. Two of those three selections have come within the last two weeks. Vanzela has allowed less than four goals in his last three games. He ranks third in the MASL in average goals allowed. He also ranks second in the MASL in save percentage.

3. Last time vs Baltimore

Adriano Dos Santos and Vinicius Dantas scored two goals each en route to a 7-6 Baltimore victory over Syracuse on November 17. The Silver Knights led 2-0 at one point in the second quarter and turned up the pressure once behind. Syracuse outshot Baltimore 23-9 in the second half, but eventually Baltimore held on for the win.

4. Best wishes to Lucas Roque

The Silver Knights would like to extend best wishes to Lucas Roque, one of Baltimore's premier attacking threats. Roque had scored 12 goals this season - tied for the team lead. Unfortunately, Roque tore his ACL in the Blast's last match against Harrisburg and is out for the rest of this season. We wish for a speedy recovery for Roque.

5. Welcome Back Nelson Santana

Nelson Santana returns to the Oncenter War Memorial Arena for the first time this season. Santana was part of the first Silver Knights team in 2011 and spent four seasons with the club. The defender totaled 52 goals and 63 assists in his time with the Silver Knights.
