Sporting Kansas City II News Release
The Swope Park Rangers fell to their second straight defeat on Wednesday night, suffering a 2-1 loss against Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2. Kris Tyrpak put the Rangers ahead with his first goal of the season, but Whitecaps FC 2 responded with goals from Kyle Greig and Ben McKendry to reach the summit of the USL Western Conference.
The Rangers (2-2-1, 7 pts.) started the game on the front foot and took a deserved lead when Tyrpak scored in the 15th minute. Daniel Salloi received the ball in space and slid a pass between the two Vancouver center backs to send Tyrpak clear, and the forward finished with aplomb for his first goal of the season.
Two minutes later, Tyrpak returned the favor to Salloi with a curling ball behind the defense, but Salloi could only put his shot wide after cutting inside his man in the area. SPR kept pressing and Kevin Oliveira put a 25-yard free kick on frame but straight at Spencer Richey in the Vancouver goal.
Whitecaps FC 2 (3-0-2, 11 pts.) found their equalizer in the 30th minute after Jacob VanCompernolle tripped Alphonso Davies in the Rangers area. Kyle Greig stepped up to convert his team-leading fourth goal of the season and make the score 1-1 heading into halftime.
Ten minutes after the break, Vancouver found their go-ahead goal with a powerful, long-distance strike from Whitecaps loanee Ben McKendry. The ball popped out to Daniel Haber following a save from Kempin, and he layed the ball off to McKendry to strike the ball into the upper right corner on the half-volley and make the score 2-1.
Tyrpak thought he had earned a penalty kick for the Rangers when he was taken out by Richey in the 70th minute, but referee Elvis Mahmutovic instead pointed for a corner. Tyler Pasher, who was celebrating his 22nd birthday, and Nansel Selbol both threatened in the 79th and 79th minute but the ball flashed wide on each occasion.
Selbol had the final Rangers chance but saw his effort held by Richey as SPR suffered their second straight defeat while Vancouver climbed to the top of the USL Western Conference standings.
