Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC News Release
Tulsa, Oklahoma (Saturday, July 11, 2015) - The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC's winning streak ended Saturday night in Tulsa, but Switchbacks FC still stand in the top of the USL's Western Conference.
The Roughnecks FC beat Switchbacks FC 3-1 on the humid and hot Oklahoma night.
"Unlucky, tough result," said Switchbacks FC Team Captain Luke Vercollone. "We gotta bounce back. Although they weren't creating much in the first half, they had more desire and won more second balls and got the fortunate bounces. The second half we played well and created a lot of chances. They held a solid shape and bunkered in well to preserve the win. We will learn from this and work hard not to get behind on the road. We will rebound and focus on Vancouver."
Roughnecks FC got their first goal in the 31st minute, when Brady Ballew (#24) got past the Switchbacks
FC defense and found the back of the net. They got their second chance less than 10 minutes later when Kyle Venter (#5) got a perfect header off a corner kick. Then it was Switchbacks FC's turn. A Roughnecks FC foul in the box against Aaron King (#18) set up a penalty kick for Luke Vercollone (#4). In true Vercollone fashion, he punched the PK past the goalkeeper and into the back corner of the net.
Despite a solid attack from Switchbacks FC for the rest of the match, they weren't able to score again and Roughnecks FC ended the game with a stoppage-time goal by Kyrian Kidd (#11).
"In the first half, we were too slow in transition on both sides of the ball and they took advantage of our slow play," said Switchbacks FC Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. "In the second half, we did well to get back into the game, but our quality around the goal was not good enough. We need to regroup for a quick turn around for our game Wednesday in Vancouver."
Switchbacks FC will now head to Vancouver to take on Whitecaps FC 2 on Wednesday, July 15th at 8 p.m.
Despite the loss, Switchbacks FC (10-6-0) have 30 points and remain in the top of the USL Western Conference. Roughnecks FC (6-8-3) have 21 points.
