Richmond Kickers News Release
ST. LOUIS, MO - The Richmond Kickers snapped a five game winless streak with a decisive 3-1 victory against Saint Louis FC Saturday night. Conceding an early goal when Brian Gaul converted a penalty kick, the Kickers rallied behind George Davis' equalizer just before the break and added two more in the second half when Jason Yeisley and Michael Callahan earned the visitors three points on the road.
Saint Louis weathered a barrage of offensive pressure in the first 10 minutes and emerged with the early advantage when Jamiel Hardware intercepted a long ball in the midfield and settled it for Jeremy Lynch who raced into the box. Ryan Taylor charged off his line to challenge the heavily marked midfielder and stripped the ball off his foot, but was called for a foul and picked up a yellow card as Lynch drew the penalty. Gaul stepped up to the spot and calmly slotted home the early icebreaker.
Just past the half hour mark, Saint Louis nearly doubled their lead when a goal kick was intercepted in the midfield but fell directly to the feet of Hardware who fed a leading ball through to Mike Ambersley. Splitting his defenders en route to the box, he rifled a right footed blast that rattled the near post.
The Kickers responded four minutes later when Yeisley's long throw in from the right touchline was flicked on by Hugh Roberts, finding Yudai Imura at the top of the box but his side volley was cleared out. Teeing up the resulting corner kick, Imura served an inswinger back into the mix but it was nabbed by goalkeeper Alec Kann who bobbled the ball but recovered.
With less than a minute remaining in the half, the Kickers were not to be denied again when Yeisley warded off defenders and earned another throw in deep in Saint Louis territory. He handed it off to Alex Lee who whipped a bending ball into the crowded box, finding Roberts with his back to goal at the penalty spot. Roberts redirected the ball into the path of Davis IV who rounded the swarm, calmly approached the loose ball at the left edge of the six yard box and wrapped a low shot around the near post to bring the score level.
Few chances to start the second half gave away to eventful finish as the Kickers jumped out to a late lead with two goals in a span of six minutes. First, Fred Owusu Sekyere settled the ball in the midfield and squared it for Samuel Asante on the right flank, who floated it over the defense and connected with an onrushing Yeisley who buried a left footed volley into the far upper 90.
Then, second half substitute Nathan Shiffman eluded defenders deep at the left touchline before playing the ball back to Callahan who switched the ball to Asante on the opposite side. Asante slotted the ball through to William Yomby who lofted a cross into the box. A missed clearance fell back to Callahan who made no mistake from distance with a blistering finish to solidify the win on the road.
The Richmond Kickers return to City Stadium to host the English Premier League's West Bromwich Albion on Sunday, July 19. Tickets are on sale now at RichmondKickers.com.
