Walla Walla Sweets News Release
YAKIMA, Wash. - In a pitcher's duel, a single play can have dramatic consequences. So it went for the Walla Walla Sweets at The Orchard Wednesday when they fell to the Yakima Valley Pippins, 2-0, in exhibition play. The Sweets were held to just four scattered hits in an eight-man combined shutout while the Pippins clustered seven of their nine hits in the middle innings, including the only scoring of the game on a two-run single from Mitch Skaggs in the fifth.
Cooper Powell got the start as one of nine pitchers for the Sweets on the night and made short work of the Pippins after giving up a hit to start the game. Alex Fisher kept the line moving in the second by getting out of a jam with runners at first and second, and Chris Tate retired the side in order in the third. Micah Gorman got two outs after giving up a double in the fourth to keep the Pippins off the board.
Against Jake Simmons in the fifth, the Pippins strung together consecutive base runners for the only time in the contest and loaded the bases, culminating in the Skaggs single that put Yakima Valley in front. Cam Richman worked out of a bases-loaded situation in the sixth, and Sweets pitchers faced ten batters total in the final three innings, with Jeider Rincon and Travis Ulvestad retiring the final six Pippins in a row.
Walla Walla had no answer at the plate for Yakima Valley's pitching staff. The visiting Sweets struck out 10 times against the Pippins, with five coming against right-hander Wyatt Mills.
The Sweets open the 2015 season Friday against the Medford Rogues at Borleske Stadium. Tickets can be purchased at 109 E Main Street in Walla Walla, online at wallawallasweets.com, or via phone at 509-522-2255.
